MoveOn.org Launches Anti-McCain Ad Campaign
MoveOn.org launched their first in a series of anti-McCain ads today which argues that John McCain is not only similar to Bush -- he is worse.
The ads will air in what are described as "McCain-friendly" markets - New Mexico and Iowa for now - and may eventually go national.
In an e-mail to reporters, MoveOn's Executive Director is quoted saying, "Voters need to know Senator McCain would continue President Bush’s failed policies – in Iraq and elsewhere. A vote for him is basically a vote for a third Bush term.”
A MoveOn.org spokesman tells CBS News that McCain has gotten a "free ride" while Obama and Clinton fight for the nomination, and they hope the ad campaign will up to ante on the Republican nominee.
The first ad, titled "Mission Accomplished", is part of a month-long, $1 million ad buy and marks the 5th anniversary of President Bush's now-famous 2003 "Mission Accomplished" speech.
The 30-second spot will air for a week and includes McCain soundbites including, "It’s clear that the end is very much in sight” from 2003 and “I don't think Americans are concerned if we're there for 100 years or 1,000 years or 10,000 years," from earlier this year. A narrator closes, "and you thought no one could be worse that George Bush." Under the narration, a hand lights candles on a giant cake with 'Mission Accomplished' written in icing.
Republican National Committee spokesman Alex Conant responded, saying, “MoveOn.org is attempting to smear Senator McCain just like it smeared General Petraeus. MoveOn.org is joining Barack Obama and the DNC in maliciously misquoting John McCain. At nearly every event, Obama bemoans the ‘negative tone’ of politics, even while groups that support him are now running negative ads. Now, Obama should prove his rhetoric is more than ‘just words’ and stand up to MoveOn.org.”

No matter. They can try to divert attention by shouting MoveOn -- clearly the GOP is terrified of this because if people ever figure out what McCain actually believes they''d turn on him, just as they''d vote for Obama if they were ever allowed to know he doesn''t agree with Rev. Wright, who is clearly on a vindictive campaign for some perceived grievance.
Obama is not every black boogey-man the media tries to tie him to, and McCain can''t answer the question of how long he''d stay if the insurgency continues.
I think there should be a 24 hour all MovOn.org Cable News Network%u2026.
Here''s the commentary on this discredited ad:
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/fact-checker/2008/04/mccains_100year_war.html
http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/cleveland_clinkers.html
http://politicomafioso.blogspot.com/2008/04/new-politics-of-distortion.html
Those factchecks are not for this ad. This ad and the DNC ad simply have McCain answering a question.
You can find the various times McCain has claimed he has no problem keeping a troop presence after our victory in Iraq Here:

Even Factcheck said there was nothing factually wrong, only that showing McCain answer a question implies he said something he didn''t. By their own standard, Factcheck falsely implies that McCain would not stay in Iraq, when this is clearly true. The most recent McCain would not withdraw under any circumstances. So what is false?
Here%u2019s the script for those who can%u2019t watch clips online:
Announcer: Five years ago, George Bush stood under a %u201CMission Accomplished%u201D banner and announced: %u201CMajor combat operations in Iraq have ended.%u201D
John McCain said the end of the Iraq war was very much in sight. Now we need to know how long we%u2019d be in Iraq if John McCain were president.
Mr. McCain (voiceover): %u201CAnd then I don%u2019t think Americans are concerned if we%u2019re there for 100 years or 1,000 years or 10,000 years.%u201D
Announcer: 100 years in Iraq? And you thought no one could be worse than George Bush.
McCain wouldn%u2019t kill the golden goose of Federal Treasury Funds diverted to the private sector at the sick amount of $12 Billion Dollars a month! He won%u2019t stop that, never in 100 years%u2026
