Obama "Fed Up" With Questions About His Patriotism

(CBS)
From CBS News' Maria Gavrilovic:

KOKOMO, IND. -- Questions surrounding Barack Obama’s patriotism resurfaced today at a town hall meeting, when a voter asked him to address rumors that he does not salute the flag. Obama strongly denied the allegation, calling it a “phony issue” and a lie.

“It’s a lie. So anybody who tells you out there that I disrespect the flag, that I don’t salute the flag, that I don’t say the pledge of allegiance, that you know don’t wear flag pins, don’t listen to them,” Obama said. “Look at what I do and look at what I say and my commitment to making this a stronger country and I get pretty fed up with people questioning my patriotism.”

Obama blamed the rumors on an incident at the Harkin Steak Fry in Iowa last summer, where he said he listened and sang along to ‘Star Spangled Banner’ but didn’t put his hand over his heart.

“I acknowledged the mistake of not having put my hand over my heart during the singing of the Star Spangled Banner,” Obama said.

“I’m gonna look at all of you at a ballgame one time to see if you always get it right.”

Obama also tried to turn the table around on Hillary Clinton’s argument that he does not have adequate experience to be president by questioning what she has done with hers. He used health care policy as an example of what he says is Clinton’s inability to reform Washington.

“Now here’s where the difference between Senator Clinton and myself come in, because you know she’s making a similar claim, you’ve got to ask yourself why is it we haven’t gotten health care reform?,” Obama said. “I mean, all these folks who talk about how much experience they’ve got, why is it that we haven’t been able to get it done?”

He also told the crowd that a vote for his opponents would be a vote for the “same old thing.”

“So, Indiana you’ve got a decision to make, we can keep on doing the same old thing with the same old folks the same old ways and hope somehow that we’re gonna get a real change, or we can make a decision that we are gonna to bring about a new America, with a new politics and new leadership.”

And lil'' Hillary is above questions about HER patriotism?

When is the last time lil'' missy went to the frontlines and personally thanked our troops? stumped for an answer? Because she hasn''t ever gone to Iraq to offer her appreciation to the troops. Soooo, where''s lil'' missy''s sense of patriotism?

I agree, I''m fed up with the patriotism questions as well. The patriotism questions are all rooted in the rumors from the right and fed by Miss Hillary (he''s not a Muslim, as far as I know). If she had a shred of class she would stand up and say, enough, my opponent is a patriotic, upstanding American. But of course we know, she has no class. Food for thought to the Hillary supporters: why are so many from the Clinton administration not supporting her? Remember, they know her best.

Hey "lil" blkpresident.. maybe you should check your facts before you run your mouth.

NEW YORK, NY January 13, 2007 %u2014Senator Hillary Clinton is visiting the Army''s 10th Mountain Division in Iraq ...

and 4 days later to visit American troops in Afghanistan.

NEW YORK, NY January 14, 2007 %u2014Senator Hillary Clinton met with Afghan President Hamid Karzai and the top U.S. general in the country today. The New York Democrat, who''s considering a presidential run, has said she wants to see more troops in Afghanistan as well.

Soooo... where''s "lil blkpresidents" sense of the facts?

This is up to us folks. Face it the reporters and pundits all get stuck in group think. They find a narrative and they report things in a manner that support that narrative. Senator Obama is a highly intelligent man and a deep thinker and what he has done with his life really matters. There is going to be some jealousy and envy to go along with the reporting and you can see it with some of the crazy questions that get asked.
We have a chance to actually get a voice in building a better future for our kids and grandchildren, our neighbors and their kids too. But to get there, we have to do the work ourselves. Senator Obama hasn''t come this far alone. it has taken the work of many dedicated volunteers. Please step up to the plate and do your part as an American. Together we can really make a difference.

Why don'' they write a real news story?

All we hear is specious trash that is designed as a distraction.

Obama AND his wife are anti-american, the friends one keeps tells the story. Michelle is only NOW proud of america (because her husband is leading, I wonder if she would have made that statement had her husband decided not to run this time and actually waited until he had just a little bit more experiance other than being a "community organizer and a state senator who voted present 100 times". She is as phony as her hair. Obama will not have the support of Hillary''s supporters(including me) even if Obama gets the nomination and Hillary campaigns for him. Obamanuts have disrespected her to the point that most of us will vote McCain, just for the payback!

Obama missed a perfect opportunity during the debate to put this question of the flag pin to rest. When asked the question, he should have replied. Mam I wear the American Flag around my heart, then turn to audience and say " Will everyone who is patriotic and not wearing a FLAG pin please stand up.
It would have been an incredible moment.

I have a lot of questions that Barack Hussein Obama fails to answer. Him trying to get distance between muslim father then radical muslim stepfather, atheist mother, he joins a church that hates America, by the way his wife said she was always ashamed of America. But he thinks people should shut up and elect him, stop all the silly questions, pay no attention to the curtain hiding oz. After all he said his grandmother that raised him was a old racist. Please no more questions!

Yes, Senator Clinton was ahead of her time when she pushed for Health care reform. Insurance and drug companies, along with Republican shenanigans interfered. Obama has NEVER taken anything on of this magnitude in Washington, so how is he going get anything done? He had a lackluster run as a JR. Senator-he was no trailblazer.
I would much rather have Clinton who has learned from tackling huge issues-and was extremely productive and effective in the Senate.

In 2004, it is pretty obvious that Hillary did nothing to help John Kerry beyond giving a speech at the convention and waging a token campaign on his behalf. Bill did even less. Their goal was obvious: they wanted Kerry to lose to Bush so that Hillary could run in 2008. Is she playing the same game now? Only time will tell.

-by *** Morris who served as Bill Clinton''s political consultant for twenty years, guiding him to a successful reelection in 1996.

I saw that then, and that''s why I''ll never vote for Hillary!!!

She could not get anything done regarding health care, even with Bill in the White House.
She can`t even run a campaign. Her lack of leadership and oversight is a dismal example of how she`d run the country. She is relying on pettiness and politics. It won`t work this time.

To croft777:

McCain doesn''t wear a flag pin and calls questions about it ridiculous.

So once Obama can stand in comparison to another candidate who also "gets" that patriotism is about action not costumes, this issue won''t be raised.

McCain was swiftboated by the same people who funded the Kerry hit job. His patriotism was questioned by Bush aides.

He has made so many statements on the record about what he thinks about that kind of BS that if he even starts to go there, he will be subject to youtube tape loops that will make the "Tale of Tusla" seem like a Saturday morning cartoon...

And as for sexism...I am a 48 year old woman who thinks that HRC has set back the cause of feminism at least 20 years. Consider this one fact, not lost on any man I know, democrat, republican, educated or not: every time she falls short, she tries to change the rules of the game mid stream.

Jon Stewart has the funniest take on this sad pattern...but she is no standardbearer for women who would like to just compete on an even playing field.

Did it ever occur to you that the media might hate her because they have to swallow her lies for 35 years?

Lest we forget, her favorite group to blame for many of her "missteps" is the media.

Obama is the only candidate to pass healthcare reform for 150,000 parents/kids in IL, a state of 14M.

Barrack''s 800+ bills from 8 years in the Illinois senate are far more extensive than Hillary''s entire elected record.
http://www.nytimes.com/imagepages/2007/07/29/us/politics/20070730_OBAMA_GRAPHIC.html
His first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These included:
**the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 (became law),
**The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act, (became law),
**The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, passed the Senate,
**The 2007 Government Ethics Bill, (became law),
**The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill, (In committee), and many more.

The change Obama has in mind revolves around ending partisan deadlock. But even then, he''s not talking about "some pie-in-the-sky, let''s hold hands and sing Kumbaya" transformation of Washington, he says. If the Democrats fail to win a filibuster-proof majority of 60 senators, Obama hopes to peel off Republicans on issues like health care and education. This has always been Obama''s approach: he is a consensus politician, not a radical.

The GOP has such little faith in America that they can only feel patriotic by categorically denouncing all people that are critical of it, regardless of intent. They use this amputated, insecurity to judge Obama''s patriotism, a man who gave up 6-figure jobs after graduating Magna-Cu*-Laude to fight for blue-collar folks, for $12K per year.

Clinton has never shown the courage to stand up for democratic principles:

1. Rendell praises Farrakhan, yet Hillary attack Obama for being praised by F.

2.Bill Clinton pardons two leaders of the Weather Underground, yet Hillary attacks Obama for knowing a third

3. Clinton Foundation gets $131 million for Bill''s public declaration for Kazakhstan''s leader...undercuting both American foreign policy and sharp criticism of Kazakhstan%u2019s poor human rights record by, among others, Mr. Clinton%u2019s wife, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York.

According to Obama he''s been in politics for 11 years, and what has he done? very little. Hillary has passed 2.7 bills per year in the US Senate to his .7. So really is he saying jus because I''ve never worked hard for posiotive change in the past have faith I will do it now...

Or is he saying his usaual the USA is a disaster, Everyone in Washington is corrupt and only he can save US. half the time he says Hillary did nothing as first lady. he basically ignores her 2-tems in the Senate and now he blames her for not achieving Health Care the first time, when she was fisrt lady... and of course he''s above the fray and not Negative. I trust Hillary to end the war and deliver a Health care plan that covers everyone and we can afford.

I have no faith in Obama, he''s a wild card. he could be worse than Bush, and that''s not chnage I can believe in.

All of the stuff going on about flag pins and saluting the flag are foolishness. I believe there is at least one picture with him saying the pledge with his hand over his heart. This has been going on for eight years and it is time for it to stop. After September ll people''s patriotism began to be questioned to stop people from questioning things that were taking place like the Patriot Act. (we all know how that was used) It is all very McCarthyistic in nature and reasonable people need to say "enough"!

You have the educated, the uneducated the rich , the poor the middle class, the different races of people, many who are without commonsense, those who not only chose Bush one time, but two, whose idea of a great canidate is one who had no face or name someone we didn''t know at all, who may very well be the most divisive person this country has ever considered for a president, Obama. He may be quiet and seem sometimes reserved but underneith it all he and his clan has mastered a divisive plan to destroy the Clintons legacy and fool the masses with propaganda, promises and lies he will never commit to.

Obama has not stopped partisan roadblocks in the Senate, how is he going to do this in the White House? Aren''t you supposed to look at a candidates record to see what they might be capable of accomplishing? Side by side Obama''s accomplishments pale in comparison to Clintons. Her work ethic is unbelievable. Notice who is taking the weekend off-it isn''t Clinton.
Everyone who has taken the time to research has learned that Emil Jones helped Obama get recognition for many of the bills that others did all of the legwork on. This happened when Obama told him of his desire to run for President. I read a lot of negative personal attacks against Clinton, and I think that is probably the best you can do when your candidate doesn''t have a very impressive resume and lacks substance.
I wonder why so many people make these emotional decisions and have this need to project a savior-like quality onto Obama. At the end of the day, he really is just a politician. He flip/flops, distorts, exaggerates, misleads and practices hypocrisy.
When you all come back down to earth, you will wonder how you voted for someone who is not capable yet of being effective in Washington.
This should be a practical decision.
Who has a proven track record of getting the job done? Does either of the candidates actually have respect in the Senate for reaching across party lines-yes they do and that is Senator Clinton. Believe it or not- Senator McCain is also well respected for reaching across party lines.

Obama and Emil Jones

State Sen. Donne Trotter, D-Chicago, accuses Jones of a little "bill-jacking" - taking issues that other senators had been working on and giving them to Obama. Trotter, for instance, said he had hoped to be named chairman of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee but the job went to Obama instead.

In an e-mail, Obama described Jones "a powerful advocate for those who need a voice" and someone with "passion for public service."

Critics offer a different picture.

When Jones married a state employee, she suddenly got a 60 percent raise. His son got a state job that wasn''t advertised to the public. A nephew and stepson got computer consulting jobs from a college that received a $4.5 million grant for computing needs.

More Obama and Emil Jones:

Barack Obama frequently cites his impressive record as an Illinois state legislator as an indicator of his experience in running for President.

Turns out, according to former Chicago reporter Todd Spivak, all of his legislative accomplishments were in his final 7th year and were handed to him by his mentor, Ill. State Senate President Emil Jones.

Emil Jones and Obama:
I called Kelley last week and he recollected the private conversation as follows:

"He said, ''Cliff, I''m gonna make me a U.S. Senator.''"

"Oh, you are? Who might that be?"

"Barack Obama."

Jones appointed Obama sponsor of virtually every high-profile piece of legislation, angering many rank-and-file state legislators who had more seniority than Obama and had spent years championing the bills.

"I took all the beatings and insults and endured all the racist comments over the years from nasty Republican committee chairmen," State Senator Rickey Hendon, the original sponsor of landmark racial profiling and videotaped confession legislation yanked away by Jones and given to Obama, complained to me at the time. "Barack didn''t have to endure any of it, yet, in the end, he got all the credit.

"I don''t consider it bill jacking," Hendon told me. "But no one wants to carry the ball 99 yards all the way to the one-yard line, and then give it to the halfback who gets all the credit and the stats in the record book."

He is still a citizen of Kenya. So, tell me, who is he more loyal to when is refusing to give up that citizenship to run for President of the "United Sates"? He is associated with terrorists, who are dominant in Africa, he is associated with a church that only caters to the black community and believes America is damned; he associates himself with slumlords who degrade the poor and less fortunate. He won his senate seat in Illionis by petitioning, and filing lawsuits, against his opponents so the courts would hand him the election(no voters here to elect him). His story has yet to be told but his spin on race wont allow it because we may just find out who he really is and not like what we see.

People keep asking questions about Obama''s patriotism because he won''t give them sufficient answers. Its as simple as that.
