Clinton Warns That Democrats Are Already Viewed as Elitist

(CBS)

From CBS News’ Fernando Suarez:

SCRANTON, PA. -- During a press conference today, Hillary Clinton expanded on her concerns over remarks Barack Obama made where he suggested middle class Americans were “bitter” over their current economic status. Today Clinton warned voters that Democrats have lost past elections because their party has been viewed as elitist.

“The Democratic Party has been unfortunately viewed by many people over the last decades as being elitist and out of touch,” Clinton said standing under a carport on a street lined with supporters in Scranton.

Clinton went on to say that voters “don’t have to think back too far to remember that good men running for president were viewed as being elitist and out of touch with the values and lives of millions of Americans.” Clinton was referring to Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., who in 2004 was painted as an elitist liberal by the Republicans.

Obama’s remarks have created an opening for Clinton to cast herself as the candidate for the middle class. “We have been working very hard to make it clear that we have millions of Democrats who are church going and gun owning and we are tired of having Republicans, and frankly our own Democrats, give any ammunition to Republicans,” she said. “What happens then is that Republicans take advantage of the situation.”

Clinton dodged questions as to whether her opponent's remarks offer an opening in this close election. “This is not what this is about,” a visibly agitated Clinton told reporters. “This is about how people look at the Democratic Party and the Democratic Party leadership. What I think is important to this is that Senator Obama has not owned up to what he said and taken accountability for it. First he said he was right, and then attacked me for raising his remarks and referencing them, then he admitted that he may have said what he said inartfully, and now he has deeply apologized if he has offended anyone. But what people are looking for is an explanation, you know, what does he really believe?”

In a strategic move to continue to cast Clinton as the "people’s" candidate, Clinton will go door-to-door in working class neighborhoods throughout Pennsylvania today.

Clinton is Dynamite fishing..... that''s when you drop dynamite in the water and all the fish come up dead. If she wasn''t hard up, she would not be following this Republican line of attack against Obama. She is using the scorched earth attack, while downing a shot of whisky and a beer. I hope that she doesn''t decide to go hunting. It''s all right when her husband put the average white voter down in his 2001 campaign, but I am sure that she forgot about that. I wish that Obama would give her some of her own medicine. If he refuses to attack her, she just might win. A lot of people owe favors to the Clintons.

The more I hear the more concerned I become. Obama is beginning to sound like a used car salesman telling different potential buyers what he thinks they want to hear. The office of President comes with responsibility and understanding, also, it is a serious job. Obama keeps telling us about "change", yet, there is a reality, that if I remember by government class, he needs cooperation of Congress to pass meaningful legislation. That means lobbyist and special interest groups too. If we elect him and it takes hin 2-3 years of spinning his wheels figuring out that he has to compromise, nothing gets done. Our country is in sad shape and we need someone like Clinton who knows how the game is played and can actually get something done. You can say ''change'' all day long and it may make you feel all ''warm fuzzy'' or ''empowered'' but there is a Real World out there and we get one chance to elect somebody that can get us out of this Bush mess. Its not Obama. The Republicans will tear him up on this issue and many main stream, small town Democrats will vote for McCain. I am in Indiana and my vote counts for the first time in 40 years, it won''t be for Obama, there is too much at stake.

Maybe she will be bring some of her one hundred million dollars as she goes around knocking on middle class doors or will it be (as she calls it), just cheap talk.
Sadly, there are many people who aren''t able to accept the truth, they prefer things to be glossed over so they aren''t forced to think to much about things. We have a huge opportunity with Obama, to really start steering this great ship of AMerica in a new direction, one that can actually work better for the people. But he can''t do it alone. It is up to us. If we really want it we can work together to get it. But we have some mighty powerful people that wont'' give up easily.

To John_Lai,
I agree with you 100%. Now I understand why I haven''t trusted Obama from day one. HE IS AN ELITIST, arrogant and aloof. For some reason he and his arrogant wife think they are better than Middle Class Americans. I wander what she would do if suddenly she was on 26 weeks of unemployment or lost her job because of age or it got shipped overseas. Or H1B Visas holders from India would do her job for 1/3 to 1/2 of what she was paid. Those two make me sick.
The blacks are only voting for him because he is black. Talk about racism.

As well she should, because he is elitist and he is showing himself as the latte drinking bigot that he really is with his comments on small towns. He cannot even win the nomination now, not that he ever could have. We Democrats better think about what we are doing and give Hillary the nomination with the rest of our votes if, we want to win in the fall.

This angle is not working for Hillary. Gallup.com is showing Obama gaining from yesterday (4/12) and today (4/13).

This attempt to define Obama is too transparent, and it is probably going to do more harm than good to the Clinton campaign.

My talking points to The African American Democrats:
African American community remember these truths in the General Election if Senator Clinton wins the Democratic nomination: The Clinton campaign, her supporters, and news reporters/pundits are saying Senator Obama is unelectable because he made a statement that is debatably true, but he has conceded his comments could have been stated better and he deeply regrets offending anyone. But Senator Clinton, her supporters, and the news media are back to playing sound bites taken out of context in an attempt to derail Senator Obama%u2019s campaign bid.
I can recall several comments made by White politicians and political pundits on the cable news stations during the course of this race that were extremely offensive to the African American community like: Former President Bill Clinton calling Senator Obama a %u201Ckid%u201D, Senator Clinton belittling Dr. Kings influence in securing the Civil Rights Bill for all people%u201D, Govern Rendell of Pennsylvania proudly proclaiming White people in Pennsylvania would not vote for Senator Obama because he a black man and Govern Rendell refusing to take his comment back; instead he said we Americans are too sensitive about race issues and we need to be able to have a honest conversation about race. Basically he said White people are racist and we are proud of it in Pennsylvania.
