Ferraro: Obama "Very Lucky To Be Who He Is"

Former vice presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro, who appeared on the Democratic ticket in 1984, is the latest high-profile figure to cause a stir with comments about one of the Democratic presidential frontunners.

“If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position," Ferraro told California's "Daily Breeze" newspaper. "And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept."

As Politico's Ben Smith reports, Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson said, "we disagree with her." But Obama foreign policy adviser Susan Rice is nonetheless calling on Clinton to repudiate the “outrageous and offensive" comments by Ferraro.

Last week, after Obama foreign policy advisor Samantha Power called Clinton a "monster" in an interview, numerous Clinton supporters called for Power to be fired. She issued an apology and later resigned.

Ferraro, a Clinton supporter, made the comments while arguing the former first lady hasn't gotten a fair shake from the press.

"For one thing, you have the press, which has been uniquely hard on her," Ferraro said. "It's been a very sexist media. Some just don't like her. The others have gotten caught up in the Obama campaign."

Ferraro''s comment is exactly why I will never, never, vote for Hillary Clinton. These shoulder pad feminists are racist and make me ashamed of being of the same gender as them.

She''s half right

If he were a white man...

the race would be over...

and he''d be the nominee.

I''m annoyed at the media being called sexist as a whole for being critical of Clinton. I think, given her history, they''ve been incredibly easy on her.

I''d really like to see Hilary release her tax information. I''d also like her to be very clear about her connection to Saudi Arabia (especially if her supporters want to keep suggesting that sexism is destroying her campaign).

I would also love to seem both the Clinton campaign and its supporters stop blaming Obama for having the nerve to run for president and the audacity to be winning.

As a side note to that, it''s pretty lame to suggest that all of us who support Obama are under some kind of magic spell. The fact that this is the best reasoning they can come up with speaks volumes.

1. You cannot blame Hillary for Ferraro''s comment.

2. Ferraro just happens to be RIGHT, and you ALL know it. He hasn''t any experience - did nothing much in the Senate.

3. Of coure Obama will win Miss. Almost all black are voting for him because he IS black, and upper class whites, because of white guilt -- so WHY isn''t she right.

By the way, it''s too bad you don''t need to pass an IQ test to vote.

However you want to look at it, Ferraro is just plain wrong.

She was selected as vice president in 1984 because she was a woman. She only had 6 years of experience as a U.S. representative.

Hillary is in her current position because she is Bill Clinton''s wife. She couldn''t have been able to run for the new york senate seat without Bill''s connections. She only has 7 years of experience as a elected official.

Obama spent 8 years in Illinois senate, then 3 years in U.S. senate. His 11 years of experience is more than that of Ferraro and Hillary.

Ferraro''s comment is racist and mean-spirited. She should blame Hillary for squandering her decisive advantage at the start of the election. Obama has ran a better campaign and should be commended instead of the insults and racial innuendos being lobbed at him.

Ferraro''s comment is a case of the kettle calling the pot black. Since her token VP selection she has had no meaningful political accomplishment (lost 3 senatorial races).

Many of you do not like to hear the truth.
Read this.This is about Obama
"You have 14 months of experience in the US senate out of which you spent 14 months running for the presidency. This is too little experience to become the President of USA & the most powerful person in the world. "
This was posted on another CBSnews story. It is an excellent comment. I am so tired of the sexism regarding Hillary and the so-called Obama walks on water routine.
This man has carried the Deep South states only because he is black. A woman voter in Mississippi was interviewed and she said of course she is voting for Obama because he is black. Oh, she was a black woman. Iowa and Mississippi were both offended because Hillary told the nation, neither state had EVER had a woman representative in Congress or a woman governer. Well, the truth shall set you free. How can you be offended over something that is true? Unless you sexist.

Barack Obama is talking about things that matter -- and doing so very well. Hillary Clinton and her surrogates are talking about census data. They paint her as a victim of everything -- a victim of the Hillary haters, a victim of sexism -- and argue that her victimization is a strength. They then turn and attack Obama -- who has bravely stood above race and has run as a Democrat, not as a Black Democrat -- for being in a victimized group. The logic -- Hillary wins because she is a victim; Obama can''t win because he is a victim.

Now Representative Ferraro is placing a new and even more false spin on this disgusting logic. She says that Hillary will win because she is winning despite being a victim; while Obama is winning because he is a victim, but that, because people outside the Democratic Party are racists, he will lose in the general election. The fact is %u2013 when we look at exit polls from Ohio and Rhode Island, Hillary Clinton won far more votes from people who stated that the gender of the candidate was a critical factor in their choice AND from people who stated that the race of the candidate was a critical factor in their choice. That is %u2013 Hillary got a double bump, from a strange coalition of feminists and racists. Obama is winning the election despite this handicap %u2013 and that shows real, deep strength as a candidate. In other words, Representative Ferraro%u2019s logic is not just fanciful %u2013 it is upside down and backward.

Hillary has run a pathetic campaign: she doesn''t discuss the issues and attacks, she''s mismanaged her money and went broke, she thought she was inevitable and didn''t plan past Feb 5.

Now, she can''t take responsibility for her mismanagement. How does she explain it? The media is sexist and Obama is black!

It''s time for us to start holding Hillary accountable for the bad campaign that she has run.

HRC is shame for all womenhood. No one in my recent history except Republicans and Karl Rove team have gone this low. People and especially women please think twice before you go and vote. You are definitely going to regret your vote to HRC. She will get your vote and do nothing for you.

Above it was stated about Powers who worked for the Obama campaign: "...numerous Clinton supporters called for Powers to be fired." And all because Powers called Hillary Clinton a monster.
To have that power would be ideal and dangerous. Hillary is like a venomous snake that slithers along the edge circling her prey and with one quick swift jump she lashes out at her prey piercing her sharp fangs through the shell of her victim while releasing the her poison through his blood stream. But what if she does get the nomination? Would John McCain be so unprepared? After all he was a soldier and a POW in Viet Nam who was tortured everyday and never gave in. Some time after recovering from his injuries, for torture the enemy re-broke the same bones of his arms and legs that were originally broken when he crashed landed into enemy territory. McCain survived ''Hell on Earth.'' He will survive anything the Clintons can throw his way.

HRC is shame for womanhood in this modern era. No one in my recent history except Republicans and Karl Rove team has gone this low. She is trying all to get somehow elected. People and especially women please think twice before you go and vote for this shameless person. Listen to her last few speeches and decide. Just because she is a woman she is able to say the type of things she is saying. It is sometime very difficult form a man to attack a woman even if she goes too low. That is exactly what is happening. You are definitely going to regret your vote to HRC. I am not a supporter of Obama. I will support anyone who has some character and it will never be HRC.

It is "He Who Can Do No Wrong Obama", the all powerful!! Do you people, and the press included, knoe the resentment you are fueling out here? The whites and the mature are rising up and, before the convention, you WILL hear from us! He is only "using" the blacks and the kids because he knows they are the sheep that can be led where he wants them to go. Not saying much for those of you being led like sheep. How does that thought make you feel?
The press is "using" you, too, because they are afraid Hillary could beat McCain and their conservative benefits and perks might disappear. Read the hand writing on the wall, folks, smarten up!!

The Clinton campaign have so much power, being able to have an adviser like Powers fired from the Obama campaign just for calling Hillary a Monster.
Well Hillary is ''extreme evil.''
But would John McCain be so unprepared against Hillary? I think not. On the one hand you have Hillary Rodham Clinton, wife of former president "I did not have *** with that woman", Bill Clinton. Daughter of Republican Senator Rodham.
On the other had there is John McCain. A Viet Nam War POW who survived after crash landing into enemy territory with broken arms and legs. McCain endured tortured over and over again for years in captivity, and never gave in. His arms and legs were fair game for his captures. They would re-brake his arms and legs while torturing him. Would John McCain be able to beat the Clintons? The man survived ''Hell on Earth.'' What do you think?

Geraldine has nailed it here. In 25 years of following politics I have never seen such a perfect storm or pure unapologetic bias for the Lord Almighty Obama and against Hillary. Its become laughable.

After SNL called the media out, they had little five minute segments on their shows asking "Are we biased? No, of course we aren''t, we''re perfect and incapable of self-reflection or humility. Next question."

Then they go right back to making cheap shots about Chelsea, Hillary''s marriage and appearance.

And all because she has dared to be a strong authoritative woman. If her name were Jack Welch, she would be hailed as take charge awesome leader.

Give me a break.

Unfortunately, what she said is true. But, she was not the first to say it. Gloria Steinem placed his bio next to hers, and asked in her article if a woman with his experience (or really, lack thereof) was running, would you vote for her? The fact is, what she is saying is true, and he is using that to get ahead. That said, there is nothing wrong with discussing demographics of success. The media does this all the time - can you say Exit Poll? With regard to another factor in his ridiculous rise to fame, the media is ultimately culpable. I remember a college course on media framing of the news, but I have never seen it so openly done.

This is absolutely true! Blacks who never voted in their lives are standing in line because a black man is running. The sad thing is most of these people couldn''t tell you anything about him except that he is black. Give me a break; these are the people picking our next President, a senator with 3 years experience just because he is black, it%u2019s unbelievable! Hillary can''t say anything negative against Obama without the media and blacks turning it into a race card and then turning it on her, its reverse discrimination at its best. Go read Obama%u2019s Black Value System before you vote for him.

The fact is, that''s complete rubish. If you put Hillary''s resume up against Obama''s, nothing stands out as radicaly different. She has less actuall political experience and he has less foreign experieince.

The fact is, if government experieince was what this electorate was seriously looking for they would have been supporting Dode or Biden, the two most experienced candidates in the field by a long shot.

But obviously this race is not about experience, it''s about leadership and wisdom. An indicator of wisdom is how you deal with adversity. Hillary has dealt with it by attacking, Obama by controlled response...who do you really want answering the phone at 3AM, the reactionary Hillary or the calm insightful Obama.

And for the record, Geraldine Ferraro can shove her outdated immature ideals up her a$$.

Huh?!? your comment makes no sense at all. You''re calling blacks racist because they want to vote for a serious black candidate for the first time in this countries history?!? A black candidate who attracts donors and voters from all demographics across all age groups and all racial groups has a significant lead amongst blacks who have NEVER seen a black candidate make it through the primaries much less actually have a serious shot at becoming president, and you denigrate that historic accomplishment with a juvenile racism charge. Powers didn''t resign because Clinton wanted her too, she resigned because it was the right thing to do.

As much as Hillary may be a monster, it is not acceptable for one of Obama''s advisers to call her such in a public forum. The counter could also be said of the Hillary camp, the difference being that the Hillary crew doesn''t seem to care if they make insulting slurs and innuendos about Obama. I guess civility is a one way street.

It is amazing and appalling that a major Democrat like Ferraro would use a blatantly sexist and racist argument about Obama, and even more amazing and disappointing that Clinton is condoning (and tacitly encouraging this) from her surrogates. This disqualifies Clinton to be President of the United States.

Now you understand why Ferraro has never been a winner. Under all her declarations, she is a racist at heart and not only that, affirmative action to her means just that - to affirm a woman to a position over any male, regardless of the fact that the woman is less qualified and experienced. Ferraro is the type that will destroy women''s rights because she expect women to be "given" and not because it should be judged on equal footing. They try to uplift themselves by putting down others.

White women are voting for "THE MONSTER" because she is a woman! And come off that bulls--- that Blacks don''t know what Obama stands for! That sounds as racist as Geraldine''s statement. Every Black I know, and they all AREN''T voting for Barack, does know Barack''s policies. He is a highly intelligent individual who is as capable of being president as any of those white men who has held the job before. He''s definitely more capable than the one in there now. I guess you didn''t think about it much when 100% of the white people in America voted for the white candidate for the presidency in any of the last 40+ presidential elections?? Hmmm.

Also, why are you so dissappointed that the hitherto unheard from black voters are now involved? Get over it! Obama has that popular appeal..that Je ne se quois that comes from being a true leader. Your candidate does not. Besides, she voted for an unpopular war with her base and never admitted she was wrong. I guess that doesn''t count if you are married to Bill.

I don''t remember the definition of racism meaning "anyone white who simply points out the truth about someone who is black" Now on the other hand, preference or favoritism towards one race over another, what racism actually is, like 99% of black voters voting for the black candidate, that seems pretty racist to me..

Well, contrary to what you might think, blacks don''t owe Hillary their vote. News Flash: Obama is charismatic, and Hillary is...well not. More pointedly, it is that sense of entitlement we see with Hillary and her supporters that that has haunted it from the beginning (when Obama was not widely accepted in the black community). That sense of entitlement we see in the responses on this blog will be the death knell. Listen up!

Why is Ferraro being called a racist for expressing her opinion, which seems to make a relevant point? I thought Obama''s campaign was against this kind of politics ... calling people names because they disagree with them. First, they call Hillary a monster and now Ferrara is a racist. Is that why the press is playing dead when it comes to Obama? Are they afraid of being called racist?

Re Ferraro-the-Bigot''s remark - only a racist could say such a stupid, stupid thing.

If. Sen. Obama were white, Clinton''s wife would have had to give up some time ago.

If Sen. Obama were white, nee Rodham wouldn''t have stood a chance.

His character is so far superior to hers that only a bigot wouldn''t see it.

Sometimes some people could make it really easy to be embarrassed for being white, let alone a white woman. These two come close.

When Ferraro ran for VP she was very sensitive about being singled out for scrutiny because of her Italian ancestry, especially when it came to an investigation of her campaign finances.

Funny, Hillary still hasn''t released her financial statement has she?

Is it because he is black that Mr. Obama has no trouble raising millions over the internet and can be transparent about his finances?

No, it is because he is a true leader.

Is it because there is indeed a latent racism in the Clinton campaign that Mrs. Clinton cannot only officially disavow and repudiate Mrs. Ferraro''s comments but also distance herself from Mrs. Ferraro completely?

Perhaps.

If Obama had anything substantial to say, then I would agree that what Ferraro has said is incorrect. But what she said is only what everyone else is thinking, they just don''t have what it takes to say it out loud. Again, it took a woman to make a statement wearthy of recognition. This is a free country and I''m proud to be an American. It''s good to see that someone is speaking out and taking part in our 1ST Ammendment right to free speech.

This has to be one of the dumbest statements in political history.. Mrs Ferraro needs to be reminded the following:
1) Hillary was the overwhelming favorite in this contest for more than a year. She even bragged about that fact in many of the debates." they''re not attacking me because I''m a woman; they''re attacking me because I''m winning!"
2) Hillary underestimated Barack because he is black as evidence of her mismanagement of her campaign not planning past Feb 5.
3) Even many Black leaders were cynical of Barack''s chances of "being in the position he is in" and put their support behind Hillary.

Barack is not winning because he is Black. He is winning because his message resonates with millions of Americans that have the hope of a different kind of politics that is not based on throwing kitchen sinks, but based on ideas, character, and judgement.
