Obama Accuses Clinton of Using "Republican Tactics"

(CBS)
From CBS News' Maria Gavrilovic:

JACKSON, MISS. -- Barack Obama continued to go after Hillary Clinton this evening, accusing her of using “Republican tactics” against him.

“When in the midst of a campaign you decide to throw the kitchen sink at your opponent because you’re behind,” he said, “and your campaign starts leaking photographs of me when I’m traveling overseas wearing the native clothes of those folks to make people afraid, and then you run an ad talking about who’s going to answer the phone at three in the morning, an ad straight out of the Republican playbook, that’s not real change.”

Tonight's comments were the most direct criticism from Obama regarding the distribution of the photo of him in traditional African garb. The Clinton campaign denied having anything to do with the photos when they were initially published, and the issue seemed to have faded until Obama brought it up tonight.

The two Democratic contenders have ramped up the rhetoric in recent weeks. Last Thursday, Clinton’s campaign spokesman Howard Wolfson accused Obama of using “Ken Starr”-type tactics, alluding to the independent counsel that led to the impeachment of Bill Clinton. The Clinton campaign was upset about Obama’s camp pushing reporters to ask about the Clinton’s tax returns. The Obama campaign called those allegations “absurd.”

A large crowd of mostly supporters booed whenever Obama mentioned Clinton’s name. As he often does, Obama began his criticism of Clinton by expressing his respect for her. However, despite the polite introduction, he quickly turned on her, saying that she accepts money from lobbyists, wavered on NAFTA, and is part of the status quo in Washington.

“Everybody always asks 'well, how come you haven’t already wrapped this up? Well, it’s because there are a lot of very powerful people who are doing very well under the existing system,” he said. “So they resist. They’ve got power and they’ve got money. But what we’ve got are the American people.”

Wyoming has and Mississippi will show that it isn''t buyer''s remorse.

I remember a Republican commentator mention in the early stages of the primary season on cable news, that the Democratic Party was being introduced up close to the Clinton machine strategy and tactics. Well as Obama has surged the magnification of the Clinton tactics has only magnified.

That''s what the American people and the remaining superdelegates need to understand. It is Buyer Beware when it comes to Hillary. Her tactics in this campaign are a genuine reflection of her character. Compare that with Obama''s.

At this point, it is obvious, that it is all about the superdelegates for the Hillary campaign. Any overtures, by the Hillary campaign on the voices of Michigan, Florida and the remaining primaries are merely strategic and cynical moves, for a campaign that has hit their ceiling and needs to go negative. They prep the press, the American public and the superdelegates by anouncing that they were going kitchen sink. And sure enough they did. They have re-defined the territory, from one of taking the higher ground as a party, to one of an all out knife fight. Barack is in the alley, exactly where Hillary always wanted him. This is her territory. But is it? I believe, Barack can vigorously fight back, defend and close this without having to pick up a knife.

doeadeer3 I agree wholehearthedly.
Obama complains about negative attacks but has been at the forefront calling Bill Clinton a racist and accusing Hillary with the labels the Republicans have attacked her with for years. The Obama camp thinks Hillary is ''a monster'' because they fail to understand what they are against.
It appears to me from the media attacks on Hillary and the soft treatment of Obama that it is easier to be a misogynist without cause in this country than to justly criticize a black man. Wait till the Republicans get through with Mr. Chicago and his Rezko connections and political dealings.

Since just before Ohip and Texas, all of Hillary''s strategies and tactics, including defending the right of voters in the up and coming primaries, are merely a cynical attempt an making the case before the remaining super delegates

The Obama campaign needs to bring this tactic to light and consistently impress this point, on the stump, with the media and with the super delegates. Anything less plays right into the Hillary campaign tactics of consistently changing the goal-posts. Break down the numbers and show the obvious game that is being played with the democratic process.

If Hill had the number of delegates obama has...and the roles were reversed, would she want to let obama have a redo in Fl and MI?

Hillary wants special treatment. She is a professional whiner who is not fit to run a campaign, let alone a country.

Gordan, the fact that you repeat your messages don''t make them any more impressive than they already aren''t....... Anyway, Obama is tripping. He got the rove playbook line from clinton. Once again, he''s a copycat. And he is the one who did the ''wink wink'' on NAFTA and also the one who has been negative from the very start of his campaign. I noticed how carried away he gets whenever he''s in front of a big crowd. He''s becoming quite an unbearable bore.

After all the hatred between these two, how can any democrat seriously think they are the dream team? Doesn''t anybody here realize that this campaign was suppose to be a change from all the others and yet for the democrats it is all about the same bashing of the other guy. Barack may pretend to remain clean from all the mud slinging, but he continues to bate her and keep mentioning her name as if he has to respond to her every mention of his name. The truth is Hillary has given the republicans so much ammo to work with with regards to Barack''s lack of a resume. I mean when another democrat, plus their loyal democratic supporters constantly talk about his lack of experience, how in the world if he should become the nominee will he somehow be able to improve that experience in the general election. All McCain will need to do is point to the hundreds of sound bytes with Hillary constantly saying Barack is inexperienced.

Just so that everyone knowsthe truth, Obama is a committed Christian, which can be checked out on snopes.com and numerous other reliable websites. The suggestion that he is unpatriotic and is not a Christian is simply the same old lying politics at work. We all know how well the old ways are working for regular Americans. If you like how things are going right now, you have two choices, Hillary or McCain. If you''re ready for something better, vote Obama.

Bear with me a moment here... Did you catch Hillary Clinton''s statement today? She stated her campaign has, indeed, been behind the viral email rumors spread attacking Sneator Obama''s patriotism, religion, and ethnicity. We believe he is stealth candidate for Al Qaeda who is trying to put a terrorist in the White House. These allegations must be true, she said, after all, his middle name is Hussein...

Hey hillsangel,

Appreciate your attempt at perpetuating a clinton spin on NAFTA.
If you check out the link below from the leading Canadian newspaper, As the article clearly sets out, the Clinton campaign is even more implicated by the comments that led to the release of the memo. The media, however, ran with the story as fed by the Clinton campaign - without any due diligence.

"PM''s top aide set off storm with Obama NAFTA leak"

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080305.wnafta06/BNStory/National/home

The repeat is unintentional.

As for your need to make this personal about the candidates. Predictable.

The America that i grew up in, although seemingly not long ago, is gone...vanished. It''s not the oil prices or the housing disasters.....but it is an obvious inability for America to rebuild itself, our wounds are still open from 911 and Katrina....who can restore the spirit that once was there? which candidate can do that?

if our elite are actually elite, if our rich are so powerful, why has no one stepped up to the plate to help rebuild? where are the civic leaders? Where are the responsible patron saints? there a dying breed, scared themselves...... hemmoraging money....playing it safe..supporting a candidate that will only enrich the few.

I have quickly lost respect for Hillary in this campaign (was initially torn between the two) and see little separating them from the Republicans in the way they (whoops, I keep including Bill)) manage the campaign and play fast and loose with the truth. That is how Clinton will govern, and it''s absolutely the LAST thing this country needs. Please dear god, for the love of all that is sacred and good, spare this tired country more psychodrama from the Clintons. Hasn''t this country suffered enough?

Clinton may have almost half of the Democrats in her corner now. What she fails to understand is that her disgusting ''Rovian'' campaign style has assured that she will have half of those democrats voting against her in the General Election... should she slither her way into the nomination. If you doubt this... understand full well that this is not politics as usual anymore. This will be assured destruction for Mrs. Clinton - and she and her supporters will be the pariahs of the Democratic Party... what''s left of it.
Mark my words.

Pfft. First of all, Obama who spent January calling Hillary Clinton and her voters racists is in no position to talk about dirty campaigning.

Secondly, what Hillary is doing is child''s play compared to what the GOP will point out: his father''s polygamy; the fact that he campaigned for his cousin, a radical Muslim communist politician in Kenya; his wife constant anti-American comments.

If Obama is too weak to stand up to Clinton, how will he stand up to those attacks in the fall? This guy is unelectable. His poll numbers are already in a free fall with the little criticism he''s recently gotten.

He can''t capture working class Americans, older voters, Latinos, or women. He''s going to win the White House with rich liberals, cult-loving college kids, and Idaho? Please!

You Mr. Obama, are a self-indulgent neophyte. I am sick of hearing your disdainful rude attitude towards Hillary. Sick of your elitist slobbery verbal diarrhea. You talk about change, but for what? Every great American leader, who has spoken for CHANGE, inspired for something greater than themselves: that would be FREEDOM. Be it Lincoln, freedom for the black folk or even JFK, against the communist evil that be. Instead, you and your wife have so graciously ascended to earth to free us of our cynicism so you may be one be proud of you country, along with all the other slobbery liberal elite. That sir, is self-love.

Secondly, I am a republican who would probably not vote for Hillary in November, but it has not prevented me from becoming livid when the media has painted her as some kind of %u201Cmonster.%u201D How can a woman condone the media for bringing down another woman? Don%u2019t my female peers understand that women suffrage came after black suffrage? That women all around the world are suffering the most in their impoverished situations, many forced into prostitution? That even in America, sexism is still latently alive?

I am an immigrant who has had to witness the indignities of women in a male dominated society and to see it happen in the greatest nation on earth pains me.

Obama is whiny, weak, and unelectable. He can''t capture working class Americans, union families, older voters, Latinos, women, or the Democratic base. I agree, in the end there''s nothing wrong with the Clinton tactics. And it is but a dress rehearsal for the general, I agree. But the tactics are what they are, and Obama is calling it for what it is.

As for any of the fearbased xenophobic recourses that the Republicans will throw out, Obama, America''s first Benetton candidate, is challenging to the core America''s view of the world. America is all the more coming of age. It is time for the infantile mentality that informs such bigoted views as Congressman King, to grow up.

I am shocked out the comments in this blog. How ignorant and deceitful. When you do not like someone just say so. People make up lies to justify their feelings and if asked to prove it would not be able to. BO is full of rhetoric. He still has trouble finding his way around the senate building. He uses others word, verbatim, in his speeches. MLK was not only a motivator but an activist. He did not need someone to help him write his motivatings. When has BO put his life on the line for others less fortunate. No, Bo goes a lives in a 1 million + house and the slum areas in Chicago still exist. He should have started make great changes in those areas he represented.

I am sick and tired of hearing that Hillary became negative first. That is not true, it was John Edwards at which time BO decided to join in. She tried to stay negative against the Bush Admin, but when she was ahead they started negative campaigning against her and the media helped to fuel BO campaign to do more. I do not care who one votes for but they do not need to make up lies about the oponent. It is appears they are not informed or do not care about the truth. Lets vote for the most capable and tested candidate. Experience counts to learn what works and what does not. If one does not make mistakes they are not doing anything.

As an Illinois lawmaker, Barack Obama was one of eight state officials consulted on appointments to a state board which later became involved in what prosecutors describe as a fraud scheme, the Associated Press reports today. That information was contained in a June 2003 memo from a national Democratic official introduced this morning as evidence at the trial of Antoin "Tony" Rezko, a Chicago-area developer and political operative facing corruption charges Obama stated at the debate in South Carolina that he only ever at any contact with Rezko when he worked 4-5 hours for a church in a dispute with Rezko. Rezko is under inditement for extorsion and political favor selling now we find out that Obama was on the very board that Rezko was selling favors for.Obama recieved money from people who had to pay money to Obamas campaign for US senate to get contracts and loans. Obama has repeatedly stated that he had no dealings with Rezko, remember his comments at the South Carolina debate when Clinton made the comment about Obamas slum lord friend.Obama is a hypocrite he says he is not like the old politicans in Washington,as more is known about Obama the less he looks presidential.McCain has an aide at the Rezko trial and if Obama gets the nomination McCAIN WILL CLEAN HIS CLOCK AND HE''LL WISH HE WAS STILL FACING THE EASY QUESTIONS OF CLINTON.

cynta55:
You haven''t done your homework. In the very debate where Hillary accused Barack Obama of "change you can xerox" she lifted Bill Clinton''s words verbatim from his debate of 16 years before - (her "shining moment" about "I''ve taken a lot of hits" -- oops -- a moment you can xerox. But she did one even better than Obama -- she lifted words a second time in the same response -- John Edwards'' words almost verbatim -- "I''m going to be alright . . . what''s important is that the country is alright" Please go to YouTube -- its right there on video (and the comparison videos of Bill and John''s speeches) are right there too. - so be careful before make your accusations.
And, about Barack''s million dollar house -- I believe Hillary''s is in the $3 million+ range . . . so is she $2 million more worried about poor people than Mr. Obama?? Incidentally, there''s a mother lode of material about Hillary that she doesn''t want you (or anyone to know)that would sink her campaign if people would just take the time to do their homework - but they don''t. If you care to know who you are really supporting, the information is just a few mouse clicks away. 35 years of dirty laundry, piled up year after year, long before she ever decided to run for president. So if you want to be informed and be ready to plant a punch, you should know your candidate and your adversary and be prepared for the counter punches that are sure to come your way, especially if you haven''t done your homework.

The Clinton Dynasty will destroy the Democratic Party and eat up the new and younger Dem voters (anyone under 40 years of age) in order to return to the WH for another 8 years. Hillary has been kitchen-sinking the Obama campaign with xenophobic, racist images--coloring Obama darker, circulating the Kenyan costume image, going nuclear on the 3 am red telephone ad, etc, etc. We the people are sickened by this dirty politics-as-Clinton-usual. The dynasty and its machine may win the nomination but the party will be ruined and the nation will (kitchen) sink even further. Hillary can only defeat the Obama movement through sheer negativity. We citizens and feminists are ashamed to be watching this crazed spectacle. She is Lady Macbeth bent on character assassination, and woe to our beloved republic under the Clintons'' heel.

I am a Hillary supporter and I can imagine Hillary leaking the Obama Photo, why would she. Though Republican might, and I think this is such an old issue, why is Obama still dwelling on it? Besides, it is a photo of Obama. and Hillary may criticize the heck out of him but no based on religion or some photo.

What I think is Obama can%u2019t take the heat and is continuing to play underhanded games to attack Hillary, and at this same time blame her for his frustration that his rise to the Presidency is not a slam-dunk. Bets are on the Barrack Obama leaked his own Turban Photo to score a triple play in his ongoing underhanded tactics in this race. I actually do believe Obama distributed the photo himself.

His reasons:

1) Obama Let the Photo Surface -- before anyone else does

2) Obama gets to publicly whine and Blame Hillary ;-( and smear her while claiming she has smeared him.

3) Great Photo Op on a slow news day for Obama, this one always gets attention.

Then there is the BIG BONUS Home Run. Since Obama loves to play all sides of every issue, including that he wants the Black Muslim and Muslim Votes and Support, he gets to be their "victim" poster child.

Home Run for Obama... way to go. NOT!

Score a HOME RUN FOR OBAMA in his Turban! That one always works for him to get press.

Barack Obama is an inexperienced nincompoop who whines every time about how he is being dogged by the big guys everytime the going gets tough. This Frederick Douglass/Martin Luther King wannabe has enjoyed enough favorable time in the spotlight. It''s time to cut him down to size, get him out of the race and choose a nominee who can offer more than rhetoric and talk *** about what "he hopes to do". Either that or it''s McCain time because this Dem (and African-American) can''t stomach the thought of voting another buffoonish novice into the White House.

Finally! When you are standing for Hope and the Future and someone comes along behaving poorly, you have to address their behavior in an adult manner. Hilllary runs with scissors, does not play well with others. If we want a Republican, we will vote for a real one, not DLC Republican Lite.

How they behave is an indicator of what kind of President they will be. If they act like they are somehow entitled to be President, they won''t listen to what the people want when they get to office.

Forget the Republican dirty tricks. Vote for a person like Kennedy and King, not someone like Rove or Cheney

Obama keeps demanding Hillary''s tax returns and she doesn''t need to file them until April 15.

What I''m curious about is how much Obama is making on this Campaign Book tour of his. Everey time I google Obama his 3 books come up first.

Try going to Yahoo Answers and read how presumable young Obama, supporters tarsh Hillary, nonstop 24/7 withn such nonsense as, "The Clintons ar e a Death Squad" and Hillary and Spitzer are running a prostitution ring in NY. They claim it is in the News. What a joke? No one will believe such nonsense. What seems clear, because they all say the same things is that there is some kind of Obama Play book for trashing Hillary with lies and slander like the above.

Obama said in a debate he can''t help if Farakhan thinks, "He;s a nice guy" well he clearly will stoop to anything to stop Hillary, all the while maintaining he does not go Negative, and he is a different kind of politician, he sure sounds Negative, and his supporters are like a squad of character assassinations pros. Is this like the Bush team, Bush the frontman appears "likable" and Cheney is the "Monster"

I''ve got to say that I''ve read all sorts of smears about Obama on the net and it seems to me that I see the same names of those who consistently post in favor of Clinton everywhere (paid bloggers?) encouraging these smear sites. I''ve also got to say that from watching the Clinton tactics since New Hampshire I am under no illusion as to how dirty they play the game and it would not surprise me one iota if they were fully encouraging Republican style smear tactics behind the scenes.
