Nader Chooses Gonzalez as Running Mate

From CBS News' Michelle Levi:

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Ralph Nader, who announced an independent bid for the White House earlier this week, named Matt Gonzalez, the former president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, his running mate today.

Gonzalez, Nader said, is "unwavering in his principles and committed to his politics with clear eloquence and humane logic."

"He's demonstrated - through his legal, civic, and political career - his steadfast commitment to the values and directions that have characterized my work and hopes for our country and its role in the world," Nader added

Gonzalez served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors until 2005 and also ran for mayor against current mayor Gavin Newsom in 2003, losing 53 to 47 percent.

He said, "I have no illusions about what is happening here today. I understand what stands before us. But let me also say, I have never run in a political contest with the idea that it couldn't be won."

"There are those that are going to say that what we doing is going to take votes from other candidates," Gonzalez added. "There is nothing that we can do that can force anybody to vote for us but we very much want the opposite not to be true. That anybody who wants to vote for us should not be forced to vote for other candidates."

Gonzalez began his remarks by saying "it's not lost on me that I am not a familiar face to the Washington press corps" before launching to into an introduction of his background and accomplishments. He noted that after three years on the San Franciso Board of Supervisors he was nominated for the board's presidency, which he maintained was "a testament to my integrity and ability to work with politicians of differing political ideas."

Prior to 2000, Gonzalez worked as a deputy public defender, an experience which he says greatly shaped his political policies.

He also outlined three "three broad areas" Nader's candidacy will focus on: election reform, poverty, and the war in Iraq. Nader and Gonzalez previously worked on an anti-war tour in 2005.

Today, Gonzalez went after John McCain and Barack Obama on Iraq, saying McCain "has, in effect, been calling for perpetual war, permanaent occupation and while we appreciate his candor, Mr. Nader and I simply do not agree that that is the appropraite policy for the region." He also argued against Obama's unwillingness to commit to withdraw all U.S. troops by 2013.

On their '08 rivals, both men had sharp words. Gonzalez argued, "any progressive in the United States can't help but have some sense of positive feeling when they see an African American or a woman" successful in a presidential race. But he argued that these candidates' progressive rhetoric does not match their records,

Nader said of both Democratic candidates, "they are talking very populist.

"When you are desperate and about to lose your job you do your best work," Nader said in a veiled reference to Hillary Clinton.

Nader also made it official that "we are not going to seek the Green Party nomination" which "has four announced candidates -- very articulate candidates." Instead, it's likely they will run as independents and not affiliated officially with any currently existing third-party.

The relief that if Huckabee does not go to convention there is another choice. Americans are not locked into just the Elite group that has intent to ruin our great nations original state. A relief that we haven''t been muscled once again. We hear from Nadar when it is needed not when an election arises, like his record proves, to help the civil morals of America. The thermostat has just been turned up! Can not wait for a debate with Nadar and any front runner! Now that is entertainment America!

Thank goodness someone else realizes that the top 4 Presidential candidates are just MORE of the same & do not represent real change. Nader & Gonzalez are sincere and consistent in their talk about change. Do you really think that Obama/McCain/Clinton/Huckabee are really going to change anything? The top 4 candidates talk a good game but we need more than better management and fancy oration. We need solutions that address the real problems. Ron Paul and Ralph Nader asking questions and raising issues would BOTH shake things up ...... and goodness knows we need it BADLY. The economy is tanking, we are spending ourselves into bankruptcy both at home and abroad, the Patriot Act is still here with us, the war in the Middle East that is maiming children, immigration is a disgrace , and the Federal Reserve''s policies are NOT helping. We need someone to raise these issues. Ron Paul and Ralph Nader may not win but they will MAKE the Dems and Repubs talk about reality, and detailed and specific proposals. Our current Congress and President are in my opinion quite clueless. They are caught up in a system controlled by the military/industrial/financial complex that is leading us to ruin. The common man is getting screwed. Go Paul and Nader!! I for one would like to see a debate among Ron Paul, Kucinich, Gravel, AND Ralph Nader. I do not care if the top 4 show up. The top 4 say nothing of importance any way, or better said; they say nothing that they will remember after the election!!

Matt Gonzalez is a great choice! My 8th grade son(an ardent Nader supporter and national debater) can''t wait to hear the two take on real issues. He''s so bored with the DNC restricted debate contract donkey and elephant show. Of course they''re not going to win-Duhh but, the point is to educate the public-inform the public and let the public decide after being properly informed. Much like the public was educated about regarding seatbelts, airbags, cigarettes, contaminated water, presciption drug hazards, food product ingredients, etc. America has come a long ways since the cigarette commercials of the 50''s and 60''s but, we''ve got a long way to go too. Our children will look back as today we look back and think, how naive we were until....

Why is it that we only hear from Ralph Nader once every four years when he decides to convolute a Presidential Election?

If Nader was what he has claimed to be, he would be a constant political driving force and would be involved in any and all manners to gain support and to set forth his agenda, somewhat like Al Franken.

Yep, Gonzalez is a good pick. This will pull some minority and latino votes from Hillary and from Obama. I am glad for it, though.

Nader is very successful. You can''t argue against his ability.

The argument about wasted votes, stealing votes, etc... it is tired. I am sick of hearing it. Guess what? That is what happens when people who generally agree with your ideas see that you fail to deliver (I am talking to YOU, DNC.)
