Huckabee: This is Not a Two Man GOP Race

(CBS)
From CBS News' Joy Lin:

SAN DIEGO -- Conservative, conservative, conservative. That was the word Mike Huckabee used again and again with reporters to emphasize his credibility as a contender for the Republican nomination. The usually light-hearted Arkansan spoke in a deliberate tone, a manner that barely masked his frustration about how the race was being framed.

“There has been somewhat of - almost a national media spin that this race is a two man race,” said Huckabee. “And if so, I’d like to say that John McCain and I will definitely duke it out until the very last vote. Last night, the CNN debate was very frustrating for me. There seemed to be an unequal level of time that was allocated – and if people look at the delegate count…one has to have 1,191 delegates in order to be the nominee. So far, no one has even broken a hundred; there’s only 8% of the delegates have yet been tabulated, and we’re all fairly close to each other in the amount of delegates that any of the three of us have."

Huckabee accused the “Romney people” of circulating the notion that a vote for Huckabee would contribute to a McCain win.

“I want to be make it very clear: a vote for me is a vote for me. A vote for Romney is a vote for Romney. A vote for McCain is a vote for McCain. Anybody who suggests otherwise is trying to put a spin on it.”

Continuing, Huckabee questioned Romney’s quest to claim the conservative mantle: “If people are looking for a true conservative, somebody who hasn’t had a recent change of opinion to become one, I would be the logical choice -in fact the only choice they have.”

Although he would have “loved” to have Arnold Schwarzenegger’s endorsement, Huckabee seemed to undermine it by challenging the California governor’s conservative credentials, and implicitly, McCain’s.

“I would never have expected the governor of California to endorse me and, frankly, I’m probably a lot more conservative on a lot more issues than he would have been comfortable with – whether it’s the second amendment, or pro-life issue, or marriage amendment issue or any number of things.”

Huckabee later said that receiving former Republican candidate Duncan Hunter’s endorsement last week probably meant more in the conservative hotbed of San Diego than Schwarzenegger’s endorsement of McCain.

He added that he has no intention of quitting the race even though he hasn't won a state since Iowa.

"I am not a quitter,” said Huckabee. “I did not get to where I am in life by quitting. Sometimes you can’t win the game but the only way you can surely lose it is by walking off the field before the clock ends," said Huckabee

"I was in it when nobody thought I could be, I stayed in it when nobody thought I could. I continue to march on even when the de-facto-absolutely-guaranteed-frontrunner-going-to-win-the-nomination-going-to-be-the-next-president-kind-of-guys were so out in front of me that people didn’t take me seriously."

"But today, Rudy Giuliani is not in the race, Fred Thompson is not in the race ... A bunch of folks have fallen to the wayside, and I’m still here. So, I plan to still be here."

Meantime, Huckabee said he had raised an additional $3.5 million in January after starting the year with just over $650,000 on hand. He emphasized how much the campaign had done with so little money. Huckabee also skewered Romney for spending “tens of millions of dollars to have the same market share as me.”

“Under anybody’s business model, that’s not a very efficient or effective operation,” he said. “If you have an MBA from Harvard, and you believe in trying to figure out the best way to build market share and you spend an enormous amount of money and you have a competitor spends a very small amount of money, but he’s able to reach the same market share, it may say that that person has a more sellable product than you do. So maybe it would be appropriate to go out of business and merge your business with the one that has the more efficient model."

Rush Limbaugh said a few weeks ago that he could not support a candidate who thinks Ronald Reagan would endorse him.

Well, look at the Republican debate in California a few days ago. Mitt Romney clearly answered the interview debate question saying Ronald Reagan would vote for him (Romney).

If Rush Limbaugh says what he means and means what he says, he should now start his critism of Mitt Romney. If Rush doesnt do that then he is talking out two sides of his mouth, saying one thing and doing the other.

Let''s see if money controls Rush from Romney''s Bain capital funneled down to pay his salary or does Rush live by principles.

True conservatives support Mike Huckabee. Let''s see if Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity let money rule them by endorsing Romney or let principles rule them and vote for Huckabee.

Actually Mike, it is the press and the conservative talk show hosts that are saying you should back out and let Romney and McCain duke it out. That would be the honorable thing to do.

Just looking at the popular vote in all of the primaries so far, has McCain and Romney right next to each other and you, Mike Huckabee, with less than half of either of the leaders. Do the right thing and give it up. Help save the conservative values of the Republican Party from a McCain ticket.

When McCain speaks of "reaching across the isle" does he mean he reaches across the isle to try to appease Republicans? Because, the Democrats surely have their arms around McCain in a strong, loving embrace.

Mike, you have been stiffed at the alter and just don''t realize it yet. McCain is just using you as a stooge to split the conservative vote, but he will spit you out like curdled milk once he has the nomination locked up.

Mike keep up great work! We are supporting you all the way thru this.

Mike Huckabee reminds me of a great marathon distance runner. While other leaders in the race drop out from the shear fatigue, Mike keeps hanging in the race like a real runner does to the end.

While the other runners have gold plated shoes on that cushion each blow, Mike has his worn out Dollar store running shoes still on with holes in it keeping up with them with shear guts and determination.

While others are out there with the spotlight on them as the perceived winners, Mike is hanging on like a world class runner within striking distance.

Mike Huckabee is in the Olympic Race like underdog runner American Bob Schul was in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics on that rainy day on the track. This is Mike Huckabee in the race to the finish. Watch this video:

Keep up the great work Mike!!!

Go Mike Go!!!

There is ONE true conservative left in the race. I will VERY PROUDLY vote for him when I get my chance. I will not let anyone tell me that that candidate "doesn''t have a chance" when only eight percent of the delegates have been decided. Even IF the race IS effectively over when my turn comes to vote I would STILL vote for Mike Huckabee because standing up for RIGHT PRINCIPLES and the RIGHT MAN is always the ONLY option for me - no matter the political climate. Right is right and wrong is wrong. That''s the brave and principled spirit that lived in Ronald Reagan - without which the Reagan Revolution would never had happened with all it''s great benefits to this country!

There are plenty of other possibilities that you can see, if you are not blinded by your own bigotries.

First, we do not trust Romney. As late as this week he was touting his support of "gay rights" to analyst Roland Martin of CNN.

Those in Iowa know that Romney spread lies and half-truths about Huckabee.

He has never given a rational explanation for his change on abortion. He says he is a life-long hunter after having hunted only once. He supports bans on 2nd-Amendment protected weapons.

well-spoken you are such a con.

You wrote of Huckabee: "We would all lose our faith in you" Tell the truth. If you had faith in him you would be voting for him.

The GOP primary is NOT a 2-man race as some in the media are trying to spin it. Mike Huckabee is only a fraction behind Mitt Romney and has a much better chance of closing the gap with McCain than Romney who has clearly maxed out his support.

The suggestion that Romney''''s supporters are making that Huck is the one splitting the conservative vote has been proven untrue by an opinion poll from Fox news:

(From http://www.foxnews.com/projects/pdf/0201
08_election_release_web.pdf)

7. If John McCain and Mitt Romney were the only choices in the Republican
primary, how would you vote?
30-31 Jan 08
Republicans: McCain 62%/ Romney 29/ (Don%u2019t know) 6/ (Would not vote) 3

Not only is Huckabee NOT OUT & NOT taking votes from Romney, but clearly a vote for Romney is actually the one that''''s a vote for McCain!!! (since Huck''''s votes would mainly go to McCain if Huck dropped out)

We conservatives still have a chance if we can rally quickly behind Huckabee!

Without his personal $35 million, Romney raised $54 million in 2007 and spent $88 million. McCain raised $37.5 million and spent $39 million. Mike Huckabee raised $9 million and spent $7 million.

Huckabee can manage my money anytime!

MIKE - PLEASE GET OUT!!

If you truly care about your constituents, please exit the race now. Your time has truly passed. Please be a man to face the facts and help your supporters. Edwards was in the same position that you are in, and he did the right thing by his supporters to bow out.

Don''t tarnish your reputation or sell your integrity by staying in this race.

It is obvious by your constant pleading for legitimacy in the last debate the reality of your position. Your inability to show well in the big states (real facts ... not polls) sealed your fate.

Your supporters could never vote for McCain. Please don''t leave us in that position.

We would all lose our faith in you if you are remaining in the race to run as McCain''s VP puppet.

How could you ever win with the skeletons in your closet? Being named "10 Most Wanted Corrupt Politicians" by the Judicial Watch for your 14 ethics complaints while governor will surely not show well. The DuMond case will haunt you. Your complete lack of any real life private sector / economy experience simply puts us on even keel with the Democrats. The economy will be a huge issue for the election, and we all witnessed McCain''s complete inadequate / lack of response on this issue.

We need a candidate that is both conservative enough and highly talented in economic concerns.

ROMNEY IS THE ONLY CHOICE. Please do the right thing by your supporters and immediately withdraw.

I''m thrilled to see all of these pro-Huckabee comments. Now to those of you who are wavering, to thine own self be true. Vote your true convictions. It is not for the media or for talk show hosts to decide who is electable. Your vote is the only thing that can do that. Don''t let the media rob you of your say.
