Huckabee's Comments On Confederate Flag, Gay Marriage Draw Attention

Looks like Mike Huckabee has the inside track on the pro-Confederate flag vote in South Carolina.

New radio ads airing in South Carolina during conservative talk shows praise Huckabee for calling disputes over the confederate flag an issue for the states, the Associated Press reports. South Carolina Republicans go to the polls Saturday.

"You don't like people from outside the state coming in and telling you what to do with your flag," Huckabee said in Myrtle Beach, S.C., on Thursday. "In fact, if somebody came to Arkansas and told us what to do with our flag, we'd tell 'em what to do with the pole, that's what we'd do."

The radio ads, from Americans for the Preservation of American Culture, also take aim at John McCain – he has been "calling the flag a racist symbol for years," one spot says – and Mitt Romney, who said "that flag shouldn't be shown" in a debate.

Huckabee, by contrast, "understands that all the average guy with a Confederate flag on his pickup truck is saying is he's proud to be a Southerner," according to one ad. "Mike Huckabee understands we value our heritage and why."

The flag flap is not the only social issue Huckabee finds himself involved with: He is taking heat for comments he made to beliefnet about gay marriage this week.

"I think the radical view is to say that we're going to change the definition of marriage so that it can mean two men, two women, a man and three women, a man and a child, a man and animal," Huckabee said.

David Smith of the gay rights group the Human Rights Campaign told CNN that Huckabee is "equating a loving marriage between two people of the same sex with some form of bestiality. I think that's really out of the mainstream of American thought, and most people will find that offensive."

I am from the South, so my opinion can be a little more swayed but I do not believe that the confederate flag is a symbol of racism, or the Civil War. I believe it is a symbol of our heritage and what we have come from as a seperated nation to a conjoined one. I also am a Christian and in the Bible it puts homosexuality and lying with animals on the same pedestool. So he is not wrong

What is he saying is correct- once you open up Pandoras box by allowing gay marriage, then bigomy, the who knows what...any version of perversion is a bad version. We cannot allow these people to rewrite the societal norms...gay, straight or otherwise. Just yesterday the ACLU came out defending *** in Public bathrooms as a private right??? What kind of country are we going to hand to our children... dominated by the "rights" of perverts...God help us all. I don''t think these are the type of rights people had in mind when they shed their blood on the battlefield for the sake of freedom.

I grew up in the South, and it was always quite clear that the Confederate flag was displayed in support of racism. You will never see a black American displaying such a flag--even when they live in the south.... And there is no reason to be proud of that dark moment in history when the South fought for the right of slavery (no matter what history revisionist might attempt to document).

Secondly, it is a shame that people call themselves Christians but fight to restrict civil rights of other Americans.

True Christians would support equal rights for the gay community, and Jesus would have agreed. Jesus never said anything against gay people, and the bible basically ignores the issue (except for some people''s sloppy translations which could be used to create hatred against all sorts of people).

Isn''t it amusing that Timoteotk brings up that wonderful Christian, Larry Craig getting support from the ACLU as an example of gay perversion. For one, Craig was a Romney supporter, and (for two) Craig is a closet homosexual--which is what some conservative Christians would prefer for gay people.

Would you want your daughter marrying Larry Craig---or would you prefer that he be in a gay relationship? Choose one!!!!

Mr. Huckabee may be a viable candidate in the South but his support of the racist symbol and implication that the Citizens of the United States do not have an interest in the activities of any one state will not be embraced by the general electorate.

Conservative values my rear end!! Some people just cannot accept change. Several states already recognize gay unions, and more will join them in the years to come. The kooky christians need to worry more about the lives they lead, and leave the *** alone!

The last time I checked, the south lost the civil war, so put that symbol of bigotry, the confederate flag, away already. Let it go!!

Huckabee only garners support in states where an education is a mark of shame! Wake up and smell the low SAT scores!!

Huckabee should know all about bestiality. He taught his own son how to slit the throat of a dog (as reported in NEWSWEEK).

His son did him proud when he threw a rope around the neck of a dog, threw the dog over a railing, slit the dog''s throat, then proceeded to stone the dog until he was dead.

Daddy Huckabee then covered up the crime to avoid scandal and later fired an aid who refused to help him lie about the horrific incident. Can you say "serial killer tendencies," anyone?

What kind of values does this man teach his own children? What would Jesus do? Certainly not behave like Huckabee, who even lied about having a theology degree.

What''s next after a national smoking ban? Can we ban eating at McDonald''s? Or is that off limits, since it''s obvious Huckabee and his whole family of gluttons eats there often.

This man is a genuine lunatic who truly believes that "angels guide his bullets" when he''s out in the woods picking off critters with his shotgun. Deja vu visions of Cheney idiocy, anyone?

Huckabee is probably the most dangerous, evil and power-hungry of the whole lot running. God help us if he gets close to the White House.

To you uneducated ignorant jerks who consider the Confederate Flag to be a racist symbol of hate:

Educate yourselves! You say you were raised in the South, but I think you are yankee transplants. The War of Northern Aggression was not fought over slavery, it was fought over state%u2019s rights. The emancipation proclamation was not issued until the war was almost over. It was not a civil war, when one side tries to conquer the other. The South wanted nothing to do with North and merely wanted to secede. The North could not financially afford to let the South secede because the South fed the whole country and furnished the country with raw materials. My first ancestor in this country was John Howland on the Mayflower, and my great, great, great, uncle Col. Asbury Coward. C.S.A. was the Commanding Officer of the South Carolina 5th Infantry and after the war the eighth President of the Citadel. I fly the Confederate First Flag and the Confederate Navy Jack from my yacht where I live out of love and pride and I%u2019ll fly them till hell freezes over!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It''s a nice thought, but the opposite is true. The U.S. WAS a "conjoined" nation until the southern states - with this flag that was specifically created to distinguish themselves from the northern states - decided to backpedal on their agreement to join the Union.

If you want to show how much you like the "conjoined" US, there''s already a flag you can fly that demonstrates that patriotic sentiment....

Uhh, yeah, specifically the southern states'' rights to own slaves, something you historical revisionists leave out for some reason.

The truth is, the 1850s were filled with political disagreements over the morality of slavery, the scope of democracy and the economic merits of free labor vs. slave plantations in the late 1850s caused great changes to political parties in the US - in point of fact the Republican party was born out of distaste for slavery, and the Democratic party split into two over it.

There''s a reason why the Confederate VP Stephens proudly said slavery was "the cornerstone of the Confederacy" you know.

''Cause in the end, that''s what it was all about.

In case there''s any lingering doubt about the real reasons for the southern secession, look at the declarations from the states involved....

Georgia:

"For the last ten years we have had numerous and serious causes of complaint against our non-slave-holding confederate States with reference to the subject of African slavery...."

Mississippi:

"Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth."

South Carolina:

"The right of property in slaves was recognized by giving to free persons distinct political rights, by giving them the right to represent, and burthening them with direct taxes for three-fifths of their slaves...."

Texas:

"In all the non-slave-holding States, in violation of that good faith and comity which should exist between entirely distinct nations, the people have formed themselves into a great sectional party, now strong enough in numbers to control the affairs of each of those States, based upon an unnatural feeling of hostility to these Southern States and their beneficent and patriarchal system of African slavery...."

The Civil War wasn''t about slavery? Yeah, right.

Actually no it doesn''t. There are no actual passages in the bible that say anything specifically about homosexuals or homosexuality being against God. There are passages that refer specifically to acts by pagan priests and priestesses but those have to do with idolatry and multi-theism.

I get so sick of the "Christians" manipulating passages of the bible to suit their own agendas. It makes me sick every time I see some kid wearing a "WWJD" bracelet while calling some other kid a "***" or "queer".

How about if you Christians taught your children what Jesus really stood for...tolerance, inconclusiveness, acceptance, compassion, knowledge, love. Instead you teach your children to be bigots and racists and arrogant, narrow-minded fools.

South Carolina needs to change it''s flag. If one''s heritage is racist, then, taking pride in it is wrong. Huckabee''s right about gay marriage though. Newsflash David Smith, you''re the one out of the mainstream of American thought. In the end, gay marriage promotes a lifestyle that can only lead to more AIDS infections and saddle such with "long and productive" poverty inducing AIDS drug costs and one has to wonder why any sane government would want such for it''s citizenry.

Denn034: your logic makes no sense. If you want to reduce AIDS, gay marriage is the antidote not the cause. If gay people are married, they aren''t fooling around with other people.

And AIDS is not a gay disease. That was just the first population hit with it in this country.

Fight AIDS! Support Gay Marriage!

(Isn''t it strange how the conservative comments here are so out of touch with reality? One guy thinks the Civil War was a noble effort? And he is proud of displaying a symbol of racism and hatred? And Christians all seem to be seeking someone to persecute?----and they make fun of Muslim-led countries for doing the same thing to Christians?

Homosexuality, Bisexuality, and Intravenous Drug Uses cause AIDS. Look at any statistic to see that. If AIDS isn''t a gay disease, then, why are 70% of all AIDS infections gay related. Gay marriage promotes homosexuality and more infections. Enough said.

It''s OK, denn, as you''ll never understand it. You failed to counter the argument of encouraging ''coupling'' instead of being single. But your blinders are not going anywhere.

Just like straight marriage does not promote heterosexuality, neither does gay marriage do that for homosexuality.

The lack of sensible thought on this matter is why the Republicans exploit it. ..and the sheep will follow...

You''re saying AIDS infects people of different sexual preferences depending on the country they live in? The worldwide statistic includes the US, by the way, and it disproves your theory that AIDS is a "Gay disease".

You can be a homophobe if you want, but it doesn''t change biological facts. If an infected person has s*x with another person, they will probably be infected, no matter which ***(es) are involved. There''s no sexual preference to this disease, period.

Mike is authentic and inspiring, making him the best leader I have ever known. He is the type of leader that naturally motivates his men to want to work their hardest , without even telling them to. People under Mike''s comand work their hardest because they love and respect this commander.

Mike Huckabee is the first candidate that I have ever had 100% trust and faith in. Please, go out and vote for him.

The first civil unions in the United States were offered by the state of Vermont in 2000. By the end of 2006, Connecticut and New Jersey had also enacted civil union laws; New Hampshire followed in 2007; furthermore, California''s domestic partnership law had been expanded to the point that it became practically a civil union law, too. The same might be said from 2007 for domestic partnership in Maine, domestic partnerships in District of Columbia, domestic partnership in Washington, and domestic partnership in Oregon (delayed because of federal judges).

Without a doubt, Huckabee is the most dishonest campaigner in either party. All the dirty tricks and lies that surrounded his campaigns in Arkansas have surfaced again in IA and SC.
Huckabee''''s only honest statement so far is that he "must have done something right" to be re-elected twice in a Democratic state. The "something right" that he did was running his office like a Democrat and his campaigns like a Clinton.
