Katie Couric's Notebook: "300"
The movie "300" is getting a lot of buzz, and breaking box office records. It's the story of the Battle of Thermopylae, in which 300 Spartans took on the Persian Empire to defend their freedom. Faced with long odds, they fought for what they believed in. Though all 300 men lost their lives, Greece was inspired by their bravery, and eventually won the battle they began.
This got me thinking: has there ever been a time in which conflict hasn't determined who we are? Has there ever been a world without war?
We fought for our own freedom from England, and defeated the largest empire in the world. Since then, we have sustained 12 major wars -- fighting for freedom, or power, or control. We're still fighting in Afghanistan, and in Iraq, with no clear end in sight.
2500 years after the Battle of Thermopylae, will peace on earth ever become a reality?
That's a page from my notebook.
