Katie Couric's Notebook: For A Greater Good

Hi, everyone.

We live in a culture that loves to sue. So what happened last week in Washington was remarkable.

After New York Times reporter David Rosenbaum was killed in a mugging last year, his family filed a $20 million lawsuit against the city, charging that mistakes by DC emergency workers led to his death. Among other things, EMS workers didn't notice his head wound -- and thought he was drunk.

But last week his family dropped the lawsuit - which many thought would bring them millions - after the city promised to overhaul its emergency response system.

Rosenbaum's brother said the family made a decision to do something for the whole city -- something that might well save lives in the future.

That decision is a moving reminder that even the darkest tragedy can sometimes be used to shed light -- and maybe, bring about some positive change.

That's a page from my notebook.
