CBS News Reaches Out To The Anna Nicole Judge

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel obtained a letter from "Saturday Early Show" senior producer Michael Rosen to Broward Circuit Judge Larry Seidlin, who presided over the Anna Nicole Smith case. In the letter, Rosen expresses interest in having Seidlin join the "Saturday Early Show."

"I have been extremely impressed by your compassion in the Anna Nicole case and I would love to discuss with you the idea of being our judge on a new segment, `Morning Justice,'" wrote Rosen. "It would be a semi-regular segment in which you would resolve the ethical and legal questions of our viewers who send in the issues troubling them."

Seidlin has reportedly been pushing for his own TV show – according to TMZ.com, he has even made a demo tape of his cases. His wife told ABC News that people regularly say he should have a show.

CBS News Legal Analyst Andrew Cohen has regularly derided Seidlin's work on the bench. "His performance over the past week was so bad, so unseemly, and so inappropriate that the Florida bar ought to immediately launch an investigation into whether he is truly fit to determine the rights and liberties of others," wrote Cohen in a blog post.

He added: "This fool has just had his five minutes of fame. He has had the opportunity to engage in stream-of-consciousness judgeship-- either that or a carefully orchestrated nervous breakdown-- with the whole world watching. Now I hope he gets what's coming to him."

It's safe to say that a job with CBS News is not what Cohen had in mind.

I contacted CBS News Vice President of Morning Broadcasts Steve Friedman, who oversees the "Early Show," to comment on the show's interest in Seidlin. "We make no comments on job offers we may or may not have made," he told me. Seidlin's theatrical style, which has included weeping in court, has certainly made for compelling television – perhaps even more compelling than Jerry Springer. Seidlin has denied that he let the case become a circus, but Cohen is far from the only observer to have derided the judge's performance.

"This may be the most ridiculous legal proceeding I have ever watched," said CNN senior legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin. "This judge is one of the least competent judges I have ever seen. He is letting this thing meander all over creation, mostly because he seems to enjoy being on television."

I am not a legal expert, and am not qualified to judge Seidlin's competence. But I find it troubling that the "Saturday Early Show" would reach out to a judge whose performance has been so roundly criticized by legal observers. There is something terribly unjust, when it comes right down to it, about rewarding the most blustery of justices instead of the most qualified. I have no doubt that Seidlin would make for good television if he gets the "Saturday Early Show" gig. But there's got to be more to the equation than that.

As a mother of six children (all grown)I have learned that you must put your wishes apart from what they have planned. If Anna bought a plot for herself and her children she obviously planned on being buried in the Bahama's.
The judge was being fair to listen to all involved. How can her mother jump in and say she wants her buried in Texas or anywhere else for that matter. Where was she when her grandson died or the baby born?
Step back mom and let your daughter be buried.
To the judge that heard the case last week. I am glad there are some people that listen to the little people and not the media. We come before you not knowing all the legalistic terminology but are expected to.
To the media: You have too much say about everything.

Iam not saying that Anna's mother doesnt love her but I think the root of everyones actions here is $$$$$$. They should be ashamed of themselves for acting this way. I dont care what Anna did or said, she deserves a proper burial just like we all do. Do they for one moment think about her laying there while they rack up the $$ in the cash register.

CBS is one of those "vertically integrated" media companies, with many divisions...like CBS/Paramount and King World, which could be interested in syndicating a show that would feature the judge, say, five days a week. (He seems just folksy enough to be the next Mills Lane...his show was handled by Paramount/Viacom, the precursor to CBS/Paramount.)

Judge not lest ye be judged?

For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged...

first cast the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.

The very fact that Seidlin overtly coveted a TV judge job and used the Anna Nicole proceedings as a de facto audition tape is enough reason to keep him off the airwaves. Personally, I think most of these "justice" shows are ridiculous anyway, but please, let's not encourage jurists to use real-life publicized cases as back doors to landing their own shows. Seidlin belongs back in traffic court, not with a weekly on-screen gig.

I can't believe that CBS actually is courting Judge Seidlin. What is wrong with this picture? He is not only incompetent, unprofessional, has inappropriate mannerisms, but he didn't even follow the law in his state. It's so disgusting that I've considered blocking CBS from our TV programming, but then would miss some of my favorite programming--CSIs, Without a Trace, Criminal Minds. Won't be watching this so called Judge & don't plan on watching any other new programming you might get until this person is gone. What a travesty to the dead!! A dog would get better treatment. djf

Oh and since there doesn't seem to be an appropriate place to put it (the one and two sentence liners that you've been devoting to hybrids and mileage), I will point out here that I don't know anyone who believes the mileage numbers of the price sticker.

And although I drive like the rest of my family (hit the gas pretty hard when the light turns green and regularly exceed the speed limit to some extent), my 4 seater civic hybrid gets 41 miles per gallon and if I ease back on the gas and watch the gauge, it gets 47 miles per gallon. That's still better than a regular car.

How much longer till we can bury Anna Nicole and forget the whole thing? Can we bribe you to drop the entire subject, subheadings and all?

Good post, Brian. You show some common sense --not so some of the producers or whoever, trying to hire this travesty of a judge.

O My GOD! This judge should be disbarred, not rewarded! We have enough "Hollywood" judges out there making a mockery of the American justice system without this fool Getting a showbiz contract! This is a crime that judges can act like that and still remain on the bench and get hollywood contracts!
