These Are The People In Your Neighborhood

My deep ignorance is revealed to me everyday (often through you, dear reader). But I did not really know until today that Mumbai is now the preferred name for Bombay. Nor did I know that it is the biggest city in the world.

In hopes of using my own ignorance for good not evil, here is a list of the most populous cities in the world, according to one source (the lists vary somewhat).

The most populous city list is, obviously, different than the most populous urban areas list.

I found both lists surprising and helpful.

It is very interesting these figures were just posted. Along with the increase in population also comes a drastic increase in poverty. 1.2 billion people survive on less then $1 a day and out of the 49 underdeveloped countries 31 of these countries receive significantly less amount of aid then they received in 1990. In 2000, the largest gathering of nations occurred in New York city and all the nations attending agreed on 8 development goals addressing poverty, maternal health, education, infectious diseases, environmental stability, etc. These goals could be achieved by 2015 if annually $40-$60 billion were spent by the U.S government. Especially with the booming of major cities such as Mumbai, these goals really need to be addressed. The population will continue to increase, and the Millennium Development Goals are in place in order to eliminate poverty and help those in the under developed countries.
