Inside The "Evening News" Control Room

First, Public Eye took you inside the CBS News editorial meeting. Then, we took a camera into the "Early Show" control room. And now, we take you inside the control room of the "Evening News," to give you a glimpse of that show's nerve center. You might recognize the director, Eric Shapiro, a CBS veteran and the subject of yesterday's "10 plus 1." As always, we present the video virtually un-edited, though you'll notice times when it jumps from one point to another. That's because our cameraman wanted to get a different shot – not because we edited for content or any other reason.

The video is 27 minutes, 40 seconds long, and it's a very good look at what goes on inside the control room each night. Check it out below.

This clip gives a really good sense of the buildup as CBS nears Evening News airtime. Camerawork is well-done, with occasional bobbles which simply add to the realism. I knew basic procedures pre-airtime, but this is far better than a structured tour. Next question: what happens when one of your computers fails during the countdown? If you never have had that experience, I hope you never do.
