Poll: Most Adults Are "Morning People"

Are you at your best in the morning? Then you've got lots of company from other "morning people," according to a new Gallup poll.

In the poll, some 1,000 U.S. adults were asked when they're at their best on a typical day. Their answers:

  • Morning (5 a.m. to 11:59 a.m.): 55 percent

  • Afternoon (noon to 4:59 p.m.): 15 percent

  • Evening ( 5 p.m. to 10:59 p.m.): 20 percent

  • Late night (11 p.m. to 4:59 a.m.): 6 percent

  • They were also asked what hour of the day was their personal best. Their top three hours were 10 a.m., 9 a.m., and 8 a.m.

Age may make the morning sweeter.

In the poll, 43 percent of adults aged 18-34 favored mornings, compared with 58 percent of those aged 35-54 and 59 percent of those aged 55 and older.

"Morning people" are particularly common among people with high salaries.

For instance, 70 percent of people in households earning at least $75,000 per year prefer mornings, compared with 40 percent of those in households earning less than $30,000 annually.

The poll, conducted by telephone in August, has a margin of error of +/- three percentage points.

Personally, I love to sleep in and finish my dreams...if my body would let me. I automatically wake up early on the weekends because I wake up so early on the weekdays (4:15 a.m.) However, I must say that I truly do get a lot more done in the morning. I''m more enthusiastic and more energetic.

I used to work 3pm to 11pm. I loved it. No traffic, no lines during lunch breaks, and one more thing, no hoards of managers barking when my team finished early.
I now work 9-5, argg, boring and traffikeering. I am currently granted an hour leaway, whereby I come in at 8am and get off at 4pm. This is great because I can get in an hour before the masses, drink my coffee and check my messages in solitude.
Downfall, I wake at 630am regardless of the alarmclock. :(

Yeah, being an afternoon guy and working third shift is awkward. I get off at seven a.m. and want a beer - IF I find a bar open they look at me like "you hideous alcoholic that has to drink in the morning". Nice people wish you "a good day''s sleep", but there is no such thing because of the normal racket around noon.

The world revolves around morning people. I worked the night shift my entire life. I have been retired for four years now and still can''t fall asleep before 3am at the very earliest. My prime time starts around midnight. Life can be difficult for us night people. It is difficult to make appointments very late in the afternoon, the phone starts ringing at 8am, and we are judged as being lazy if we are not up and at em at 7am. Any comments from other night people??
