Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan is leaving, the team announced Tuesday.

A news release announcing Donovan's departure did not specify why he was leaving or what his next steps would be. But it did include quotes from Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf, president Michael Reinsdorf, and Donovan himself.

"After a series of thoughtful and extensive discussions with ownership regarding the future of the organization, I have decided to step away as the head coach of the Chicago Bulls, to allow the search process to unfold. I believe it is in the best interest of the Bulls, to allow the new leader to build out the staff as they see fit," Donovan said in a news release.

In the release, Jerry Reinsdorf called Donovan "one of the finest people and coaches" he'd known.

"He brought class and genuine care to this organization that made a real impact on people. We wanted Billy to continue as our head coach — that was never in question. But through honest conversations, we all agreed that giving our new Head of Basketball Operations the right to build out his staff was the most important thing for the future of this franchise."

Donovan does plan to continue coaching, and will likely be a hot target for other teams.

Donovan became head coach of the Bulls in September 2020 after five seasons as head coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Just this past July, Donovan signed a multi-year contract extension.

Earlier this month, the Bulls fired vice president Artūras Karnišovas and general manager Marc Eversley after missing the playoffs for the fourth year in a row. Karnišovas and Eversley had run the team's front office since April 2020.

During that time, the Bulls went 224-254, a .469 winning percentage, and the team made the playoffs only once, losing in the first round to the Bucks in 2022. They reached the play-in tournament in 2023, 2024, and 2025, but lost all three times.

The reigning NFC North champs arrived back at the Lake Forest facility on Monday morning with their division title and the franchise's first playoff victory in 15 years in the rear-view mirror.

With the bar raised, QB Caleb Williams is ready for head coach Ben Johnson to push him even harder to elevate his good from better to best.

"One of the first things we talked about when we first met, I guess two days after the game, was it's going to be more," Williams said. "It's going to be more difficult. I'm going to push you more, and my answer is yes, sir, let's do it."

Williams said he and Johnson each have a goal that aligns with each other.

Tight end Cole Kmet added to Johnson's coaching, saying that he and the coaching staff are going to do a great job of pushing the team in the upcoming season.

"Not that we shouldn't have some level of confidence in ourselves, but, you know, it's going to be important to kinda rip it back down and understand that we're all 0-0 here in the NFL. There's going to be, like I said, there's a lot of parody, and it's very hard to get back to where we were last year and even further," Kmet said.

As for the NFL Draft, the Bears currently hold seven draft picks, starting with the 25th overall in the first round, their lowest selection in well over a decade.

Chicago Sun-Times beat writer Patrick Finley spoke about which position of need General Manager Ryan Poles will address off the top when the Bears go on the clock Thursday night in Pittsburgh.

"I think they gotta start at edge rusher, that is a position that's a premium spot," Finley said. "We've heard Poles over the years talk about the emphasis you need to put on solving premium positions. The Bears didn't do that in free agency."

Finley said the team could still use a defensive end, and there will for sure be one in the draft. He said even experts in the draft advise the Bears to stay with their 25th spot and take the best edge rusher. Beyond that, he said, the team could also look at a defensive tackle, a corner back, or possibly a left tackle, but thinks the team should stay with an edge rusher.

Poles and Assistant General Manager Jeff King are expected to speak on the NFL draft on Tuesday after the annual Brian Piccolo Award Ceremony.

Nico Hoerner hit a sacrifice fly off Craig Kimbrel in the 10th inning, and the Chicago Cubs sent the New York Mets to their 11th consecutive loss by rallying for a 2-1 victory Sunday.

Pinch-hitter Michael Conforto tied it for Chicago in the ninth with an RBI double off closer Devin Williams.

Pete Crow-Armstrong opened the 10th on second as the Cubs' automatic runner. Dansby Swanson fouled off two bunt attempts before Kimbrel (0-1) threw a wild pitch, moving Crow-Armstrong to third.

After Swanson struck out swinging, Hoerner lofted a flyball to right and Crow-Armstrong scored easily.

Caleb Thielbar (1-1) worked a scoreless 10th for Chicago, which posted its season-high fifth straight win.

MJ Melendez homered for New York, which finished with six hits. David Peterson pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings of bulk relief after manager Carlos Mendoza decided to go with Tobias Myers as an opener.

It's the longest losing streak for the Mets since they also dropped 11 in a row from Aug. 28 to Sept. 8 in 2004. They have been outscored 62-19 during the slide, and they are averaging just 2.9 runs over 17 games in April.

The Cubs rallied in the ninth against Williams. Ian Happ hit a leadoff single and pinch-runner Scott Kingery scored from first on Conforto's one-out double into the right-field corner against his former team, tying it at 1. Conforto was stranded when Williams struck out Carson Kelly and Crow-Armstrong, both swinging.

Melendez began the fifth with a drive to right-center on a full-count fastball from Javier Assad. It was his first homer since he was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday.

Chicago had at least one baserunner in each of the first seven innings.

Crow-Armstrong hit a leadoff triple in the third, but Peterson retired Swanson on a grounder to third before Hoerner lined to second for an inning-ending double play.

Up next

Mets: Following an off day, RHP Nolan McLean (1-1, 2.28 ERA) starts Tuesday night against Minnesota in the opener of a nine-game homestand. RHP Mick Abel (1-2, 3.98) goes for the Twins.

Cubs: RHP Colin Rea (2-0, 3.63 ERA) starts Monday night in the opener of a four-game series against Philadelphia.

After winning nine games last year, UIC softball is seeing progress this season.

They're being led by new head coach Megan Coronado, who is a former player with roots that run deep in Chicago.

Coronado is helping ignite the Flames in her first season as head coach at UIC.

"Keep growing. It's never enough, I think, especially for this program. I'm so excited to see where we go, but staying humble in that, and what does that mean as far as this season right now, what can we do to get better?" she said.

A mentality that helped Coronado win a lot of games as a former DePaul standout who played under Eugene Lenti. The Blue Demons' winningest head coach of 37 years is an assistant on her staff.

"Meagan's grittiness, really, she was gritty. She was versatile too, she's left-handed, but she played first base for us, she played second base for us, she played the outfield. She knows what she's doing, she's very articulate, she's very in tune of what the girls need," he said.

"Learning," Coronado said. I never stopped learning. I think that's one of the things he taught us early on as athletes, when we played for him, there's something you can always be doing more for your athletes or for your program. We have a bunch of kids that are playing positions that they probably didn't start playing when they first started softball, but they were willing to do whatever it took for this team," Coronado said.

That's led to positive results with the Flames surpassing last year's win total and conference win total early on this season.

"Each game we learn something new, and I think that's really special that we have so much growing to do because we don't want to hit our peak right now, so I think that's really good," said infielder Sam Tourtillott.

Having a head coach who knows what it takes to make three NCAA tourney appearances and two NCAA regional finals as a player isn't the only thing that's been good for this team.

"I've never had a coach like in it with us, like doing everything with us, not only doing it but winning, winning our spirits lifting the most on the team, and I think that really just sets the tone for us," Tourtillott said.

"Having a coach that's like willing to like want to help you, make you better every single day, like she plays with us. She's as competitive as we are," said utility player Siena Stickney.

If teams take on the personality of their head coach, expect UIC to always have competitive players under Coronado.

"That flame, that ignition, that competition it's here, and I knew it was here. And I believe in the city of Chicago as far as what talent is here and what we have to offer," Coronado said.

Pinch-hitter Carson Kelly connected for a tiebreaking three-run homer in the sixth inning, and the Chicago Cubs handed the New York Mets their 10th consecutive loss with a 4-2 victory on Saturday.

Ian Happ also homered for Chicago in its fourth consecutive win. Jameson Taillon (1-1) pitched six crisp innings.

It's the longest losing streak for New York since it dropped 11 in a row from Aug. 28 to Sept. 8 in 2004. It has been outscored 60-18 during the slide.

The game was tied at 1 when Mets right-hander Freddy Peralta (1-2) issued two consecutive walks with two down in the sixth. Peralta then was replaced by left-hander Brooks Raley, and Kelly was sent up to hit for Moisés Ballesteros, a rookie who bats from the left side.

Kelly drove Raley's first pitch into the bleachers in left-center for his second homer of the season, sending a charge through the crowd of 36,189. It was Kelly's second career pinch-hit drive.

It also was the first homer allowed by Raley since Aug. 13, 2023, stopping a streak of 53 2/3 innings.

Mark Vientos homered for New York. Francisco Lindor and Luis Robert Jr. each had two hits.

The Mets scored an unearned run on second baseman Nico Hoerner's throwing error in the eighth, but Ben Brown escaped the jam when Vientos grounded out.

Caleb Thielbar handled the ninth for his first save of the season. Daniel Palencia, Chicago's usual closer, was placed on the 15-day injured list on Friday with a left oblique strain.

New York jumped in front on Vientos' 434-foot drive to left-center in the second. He went 1 for 25 with eight strikeouts and no walks in his previous eight games.

Happ responded with a leadoff shot in the bottom half, a 431-foot drive to center. Happ also went deep during Chicago's 12-4 victory in the series opener.

Up next

Tobias Myers (0-1, 3.46 ERA) starts the series finale for New York, and fellow right-hander Javier Assad (1-1, 8.10 ERA) pitches for Chicago on Sunday. David Peterson had been slated to start for the Mets, and the team did not immediately announce a reason for the change.

Chicago White Sox pitching prospect Noah Schultz had an uneven major league debut in a start against the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night after being recalled from Triple-A Charlotte.

The 6-foot-10, 22-year-old left-hander had a jittery first inning when he allowed three runs — with two scoring on his throwing error to the plate —before settling down. Schultz went 4 1/3 innings, allowed four runs, three earned, on three hits, with four strikeouts and four walks. He took the loss as Tampa Bay won 8-5 for its fourth straight victory.

"I bounced back after the first inning," Schultz said. "Got ahead of the hitters a little bit more. There were nerves in the first inning and nerves the whole time. Things to work on and good to get the first one out of the way."

At 22 years and 252 days old, Schultz is the youngest starting pitcher to debut with the White Sox since Michael Kopech (22 years, 113 days) on Aug. 21, 2018, against Minnesota.

Schultz came in on a roll, with a 1.29 ERA in three games and 14 innings with Charlotte. He permitted only six baserunners while striking out 19 of 47 batters. Schultz is rated by Baseball America as the No. 1 prospect in the White Sox organization and No. 21 overall.

The Rays jumped out 3-0 in the first. Schultz walked Jonathan Aranda and Junior Caminero with one out and Ryan Vilade's double made it 1-0.

Ben Williamson bunted back to the mound and Schultz threw wildly to home, allowing Caminero and Vilade to score.

"Kind of after the first inning, learn to breathe," Schultz said. "Got some nice words from guys in the dugout to calm down and help settle me down."

According to Chris Getz, the team's senior vice president and general manager, the timing was right for Chicago to call up the 240-pound lefty.

"We just felt like he was at such as good place developmentally," Getz said before the game. "We just wanted to capture his productive start and hopefully he can carry that over to the major league level.

"He's got the stuff to be a front-line pitcher in this game," Getz added. "His fastball's been up to 98 mph. He's commanding his sliders, commanding all pitches."

Getz said stopped short of saying Schultz would assume a regular spot in the the rotation.

The White Sox selected Schultz in the first round, 26th overall, in the 2022 MLB draft. The Chicago-area native is a graduate of Oswego (Illinois) East High School, about 40 miles west of Rate Field, and his family members and friends were already at the ballpark before the the gates opened to the general public.

Getz said Schultz had rehabbed thoroughly from right patellar tendinitis, a knee condition that had hindered him in the minors last season, and now had improved overall lower-body strength.

The White Sox also brought back outfielder Everson Pereira from a rehab assignment at Charlotte on Tuesday and reinstated him from the 10-day injured list. He hit a three-run homer off Rays starter Shane McClanahan, who pitched five innings for his first win in nearly three years.

Chicago placed right-hander Jonathan Cannon on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to April 13, with right hip inflammation.

Pereira, 24, went on the injured list on April 5, retroactive to April 3, with a left ankle sprain.
Carson Kelly hit a three-run homer, Colin Rea pitched six strong innings and the Chicago Cubs rallied to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 10-4 on Tuesday night.

Nico Hoerner and Alex Bregman each had three RBIs for the Cubs.

Edmundo Sosa homered for the Phillies.

Chicago broke a 3-all tie with four runs in the sixth inning off Tim Mayza (0-1). Hoerner and Bregman each had two-run singles in the inning and the Cubs were aided by a Phillies miscue.

After Mayza put runners on first and second with one out with a walk and hit batter, Dansby Swanson hit a hard grounder back to the pitcher that was a potential double play. Mayza threw slightly off target to second base, and Bryson Stott could not make the catch. Stott was charged with a fielding error on the play. Instead of runners on first and second with two outs, or an inning-ending double play, Chicago had the bases loaded with one out.

Hoerner made Philadelphia pay with a liner to center. After Brad Keller replaced Mayza, Bregman knocked in two more runs.

Rea (2-0) followed opener Riley Martin, who worked a 1-2-3 first. He surrendered Sosa's three-run homer to left-center that gave the Phillies a 3-0 lead before retiring 16 of the next 17 batters, including 10 in a row to close his outing. Rea struck out five and walked none.

Philadelphia got a run back in the eighth and threatened for more with the bases loaded and two outs, but Caleb Thielbar struck out pinch-hitter Alec Bohm to end the inning. Kyle Schwarber extended his on-base streak to 15 games with a one-out single in the inning.

Kelly made it a six-run advantage with his first homer of the season in the ninth off Tanner Banks.

Phillies starter Aaron Nola lasted five innings, allowing three runs on eight hits.

Cubs LHP Shota Imanaga (0-1, 2.81) opposes Phillies LHP Jesús Luzardo (1-2, 6.23) on Wednesday night in the rubber game of the three-game series.

Former Oswego East High School standout Noah Schultz is getting ready to step on the mound for the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night for his Major League Baseball debut with his hometown team.

Schultz, ranked the No. 2 prospect in the White Sox organization, was their first-round draft pick in 2022.

His mother, Kim, said they got the call Saturday night that he'd be making his big league debut on Tuesday at Rate Field against the Tampa Bay Rays.

"I had the phone kind of to the side, and it kept buzzing," she said. "Noah had called the sisters. His sisters had texted me, 'Call Noah.' So he was pretty, pretty excited, for sure."

Noah, a 6'10" left-hander, played for Oswego East High School before being drafted No. 26 overall by the White Sox in 2022.

"We've just done this for 15 years, you know, and it really paid off, you know, physically, emotionally, financially," his mother said.

After he was drafted, Schultz signed a minor league contract with a $2.8 million signing bonus.

Kim Schultz said reaching this moment took years of sacrifice for a family of competitors, with Noah's older sisters playing collegiate softball for Northwestern and Stanford, and Noah pursuing his baseball dreams.

"Athletics really drives you down a path that there's some fun, but not as much. You know, there's no overnights on Friday, because you've got to go work out Saturday morning. You've got practice; really, no family vacation," she said.

Hundreds of family, friends and Oswego East community members are expected to be at Rate Field to watch Noah's debut, a moment his mother is eagerly bracing for.

"I'm sure I'll be emotional, but, yeah, it's going to be great," she said.

It's also a moment she has prepared her son for, offering him some words of advice for his big night.

"I mean, 'just relax, and you know what to do.' And, you know, once he gets that ball, he knows to just take care of business. And he really is a different person out there. You know, I see him as, you know, a little kindergartner next to me on the bench, going to the bus, but he's got this, I really believe it," she said.

Obviously, a lot of nerves come with an MLB debut, but Schultz seems like he has the makeup to handle it.

"For a young guy, he seems very much under control. You know, there's probably going to be a lot of emotions tonight for him, but expect him to be able to handle it. He's a very mature guy, and understands what this moment means, and, yeah, he's ready for it," manager Will Venable said.

Fellow Sox pitcher Sean Burke said he's been telling Schultz to enjoy the moment and not worry too much about how he'll do.

"It's another game, and he's a super-talented kid, so he should be good tonight. I'm excited to see what he's got," Burke said. "I know he's prepared for this, and he's excited for it."

Schultz's teammates feel the excitement ahead of the 22-year-old fireballer taking the mound for the first time in the majors. The southpaw is 3-0 with a 1.29 ERA over 14 innings in his three starts in Triple-A Charlotte this season.

The White Sox aren't expecting Schultz to immediately be as dominant in the majors as he has been at Triple-A this season, but general manager Chris Getz isn't holding back on their high long-term expectations for Schultz.

"I want him to get out here and get comfortable and compete. He's got the stuff to be a frontline pitcher in this game. He's shown that. I mean, his fastball has been up to 98 miles an hour, he's commanding his slider, he's commanding all pitches," Getz said. "So, if he sticks to that game plan, and the stuff remains what it has been here recently, and what it's been in the past, he's going to have success."

Northwestern's powerhouse women's lacrosse team has been to three straight national championship games and six straight final fours.

The Wildcats are led by another record-setting superstar, hoping to lead them back to the top.

Senior Madison Taylor is picking up where she left off last year, when she broke the NCAA Division I record for goals in a single season, with 109.

"I never thought I'd be in this position," she said. "I'm super grateful to be here and be playing with this team. It's just been awesome."

Taylor, who actually was not a super highly touted recruit out of high school in New York, has secured her spot among the best in the sport.

On April 4, she joined another recent Wildcats superstar, Izzy Scane, as the only two players in program history to score 300 career goals.

"It was cool. I mean, any day we get to play at home game outdoors like that is just an awesome day. Definitely a day we're all going to remember, and so much went into it," she said.

And to have it happen, on their second annual Lacrosse Day in Chicago, in front of a record crowd of over 5,800 fans, made it even more special.

"It was such a cool environment. We've never done anything like that before, where we had a doubleheader with Notre Dame men's team playing, and then we played after them. So it was super cool. So many fans. So much people helped put into that amazing day, so we're just super grateful for them, and it was just a really cool experience," Taylor said.

After a couple of rare early-season setbacks by the high standards of Northwestern lacrosse, the Wildcats got back on track in a big way with a win over then No. 1 North Carolina on their home turf in thrilling fashion.

"Yeah, it was awesome. We've had a lot of ups and downs this year. We've learned to stay calm and consistent. You always learn the most when you go through those hard moments and those losses. We've learned so much from them. It's been able to push us through this season, and we're kind of right where we want to be right now," she said.

Where they want to be at the end of the season is back competing for a national championship.

"At the same time, we're also trying to take it day by day. I think that's when the results will come instead of thinking so far ahead. I think especially for this group right now we're super focused on each practice, just trying to get better and become the best versions of ourself and the team," Taylor said.

If there's a better version of Madison Taylor, that would certainly be scary for any of the Wildcats opponents the rest of the way.

Rory McIlroy joined more elite company Sunday at the Masters when he pulled away with a pair of birdies around Amen Corner and, as usual, saved a little drama for the end before taking his place in Augusta National history as only the fourth back-to-back champion.

In a final round where three players had a two-shot lead, McIlroy seized control for good with a bold shot over Rae's Creek to 7 feet for birdie on the par-3 12th. Then he blistered a 350-yard drive on the par-5 13th that set up another birdie to move three shots ahead.

There were a few dicey moments, including a shot over the par-3 16th green that required him to use the slope to get in close for par, and a wild drive on the 18th that wound up closer to the 10th fairway. He tapped in for bogey and a 1-under 71 for a one-shot victory over Scottie Scheffler.

A year ago, his playoff victory over Justin Rose made McIlroy only the sixth player with the career Grand Slam. With another green jacket, McIlroy joined Tiger Woods, Nick Faldo and Jack Nicklaus as the only repeat winners of the Masters.

"A few guys made a run, but nothing like Justin last year with that 66," McIlroy said. "Some good play by me, and fortunately, some guys didn't come after me this year."

McIlroy stood tall when he tapped in the final putt to finish at 12-under 276. There was no relief like last year of going 17 years trying to win the Masters. This was pure joy.

Rory McIlroy celebrates winning the 2026 Masters Tournament on the 18th green at Augusta National Golf Club on April 12, 2026, in Augusta, Georgia.

It was more heartache for Rose, and frustration for the others who had a chance.

Rose had a two-shot lead that evaporated around Amen Corner with two bogeys and a three-putt par. He couldn't make up enough ground the rest of the way and had to settle for a third close call at the Masters.

Cameron Young lost his two-shot lead much earlier with a long three-putt bogey on the par-3 sixth and taking bogey on the next hole when he hit wedge from the fairway into a bunker. One shot behind going to the back nine, Young closed with nine straight pars.

As for Scheffler, the world's No. 1 player was in position to shatter the Masters record with the largest 36-hole comeback in history. He was 12 behind going into the weekend. He was two shots behind as he approached the turn. But he ran off 11 straight pars - that wasn't going to cut it during a final round with accessible pins to create excitement.

Scheffler had to settle for his third runner-up finish in the majors to go along with four titles. His 65-68 weekend made him the first player since 1942 to go bogey-free on the weekend at Augusta.

"I put up a good fight in order to give myself a chance," Scheffler said.

Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland poses with the Masters trophy during the Green Jacket Ceremony after winning the final round of the 2026 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club on April 12, 2026, in Augusta, Georgia.

Rose, at age 45, trying to become the second-oldest Masters champion behind Jack Nicklaus (46) in 1986, made it feel as though this was going to be his time. He made a most improbable birdie with a shot out of the trees to a foot on the seventh. That was the start of three straight birdies to close out the front nine and give him the lead.

But his approach to the 11th was well to the right and he failed to save par. His tee shot on the 12th was long, and his delicate chip didn't reach the green, leading to another bogey. And then his 30-foot eagle putt on the par-5 13th ran 8 feet by the hole and he missed the birdie putt.

"Chance that got away," Rose said. "I was by no means free and clear and was nowhere kind of close to having the job done, but I was right in position. ... I was really in control. And the mentality was to run through the finish line, not just try and get it done.

"I was playing great, but just momentum shifted for me around the Amen Corner."

At the end it was a now familiar champion, McIlroy, once tormented by his chase for the green jacket and now a two-time winner whose love for the Masters only deepens.

He was so ecstatic a year ago that he asked the media when it was over, "What are we going to talk about next year?" Now the topic is easy. No one has ever won three in a row.
