Winter Event Has Started
We are under a Winter Storm Warning now to 6pm Monday. This includes the Metroplex:
There will be less sleet falling across our southern counties, hence less impact. A Winter Storm Advisory is in place there from 9pm tonight to 6pm Monday:
We've had a cold rain so far today with temperatures slowly dropping into upper 30's. As of 4pm sleet has started to build up on the roads across Montague Co. .
This round of mix/rain will leave out to the east just as temperatures start to fall by early evening to freezing or below. Across Cooke, Montague, Wise and Palo Pinto Counties and NW the freezing temperatures arrived earlier this afternoon. Icing on bridges and overpasses have started in these areas and will worsen through the night.
If you are in the Metroplex you should be able to get around on the roads up to late evening at least. Then the below-freezing temperatures and light freezing drizzle/sleet will start to cover the bridges and overpasses, especially the non-treated ones.
The real problems start in the early morning hours as a second wave of precipitation moves in. The snow will be north along the Red River. Across north Texas this looks to Sleet with occasional freezing rain. This will be a high impact weather event. Expect roads to quickly become impassable:
The bulk of the sleet/freezing rain will fall during the morning up to noon. We expect occasional, light amounts to continue to fall in the afternoon all the way into early Tuesday morning:
Total sleet accumulation could top 2" in places with most others getting under 1":
Thundersleet is possible over the northwest quadrant tomorrow morning; this will produce copious amounts of sleet in isolated areas. This threat area includes portions of Tarrant County. Where this occurs the roads will become almost impassable and power disruptions more widespread.
Most of Metroplex will end up with 1/2" to 1" of sleet, enough to make for hazardous road conditions and produce power outages:
To the south of the Metro area from Bosque County over to Anderson (and south of there) we expect less in total sleet but perhaps more in Freezing Rain. Roads impacts won't be as bad as the metro area but still significant:
I highly recommend that you try not to travel anywhere on Monday, especially in the morning when the icing starts. Temperatures are going to stay in the 20's all day in the Metroplex and get down to the low 20's by Tuesday morning. The ice will still be around for the start of Tuesday. We should have a little sunshine and temperatures in the upper 30's by afternoon to help the roads. Then things will re-freeze for Wednesday morning.
Don't get caught outside tomorrow. Wind chills are going to be below zero at times:
While this is our first major winter event of the season it looks like we might even get another one going into next weekend. Still to far out to be specific on precipitation types and timing but it'll be cold enough to hits us with a wintry mix at least Friday and/or Saturday:
