DENTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Texas Women's University announced Saturday that head volleyball coach Shelly Barberee resigned to focus on personal matters.

Barberee took a leave of absence on August 12, 2016 to address a personal matter.

Eight volleyball players were hospitalized last weekend for the medical treatment of symptoms related to rhabdomyolysis, which is a syndrome that causes a breakdown of muscle tissue and releases a damaging protein into the blood.

"Today, I have decided to resign from my position as head volleyball coach at TWU, which is in no way related to student-athletes' hospitalization," said Barberee.

TWU volleyball assistant coach Jessica Beener was named interim head coach.
