WASHINGTON (AP) - After losing the popular vote, President-elect Donald Trump has decided that the Electoral College is a pretty smart way to elect a president after all.

By the time all the votes are counted, Democrat Hillary Clinton will have won the popular vote by more than 1 million, with big leads in big blue states.

Democrats have used Clinton's vote lead to downplay any mandate Trump might claim.

Trump has shot back on Twitter, saying he would have campaigned differently if the winner were decided by the popular vote.

Trump has 290 Electoral College votes and Clinton has 232, with Michigan still undecided. It takes 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the presidency.

Four years ago, Trump called the Electoral College a disaster. This week, he called it "genius."
