Freeway reopens 14 hours after a truck carrying acid crashed in Roanoke

Hazmat cleanup underway after truck hauling acid crashes in Denton County

It took hazmat crews almost 14 hours to clean up an acid spill after an 18-wheeler rollover crash in Roanoke early Thursday morning, authorities said.

The truck overturned just before 5:30 a.m. on the westbound lanes of Highway 114 between I-35W and Highway 377. The truck was hauling liquid acid, the city said in a statement.

The driver of the truck was taken to the hospital as a precaution, but no injuries were reported.

The city did not say what type of acid spilled, but the trucking company coordinated with a environmental remediation contractor to clean up the mess.

"Out of an abundance of caution, environmental agencies are overseeing additional remediation activities in areas adjacent to the roadway, including a nearby creek, to ensure there are no off-site impacts," the city said in a news release.

The Texas DPS is investigating the crash. The westbound lanes of 114 were closed until almost 7:30 p.m. for the investigation and cleanup.

There was no immediate word if the weather played a role in the accident.
