NORTH TEXAS (CBS 11 NEWS) - Whether your child is starting preschool or pre-med, parents understand this time of year can be stressful on the whole family.
To help ease the new school year's anxieties, here's our Top Five Tips to help your family get back to school.
1. Ease back into a school schedule
You can't expect your child, who's been staying up until 11:00 p.m. in the summer, to all of sudden be ready to go to bed at 9:00 p.m. when the school year begins.
Sleep experts recommend beginning two weeks before school starts, move your child's bedtime up 20 minutes every three nights until they are back on schedule .
2. Get to know the teacher
If your school doesn't have a meet your teacher night, make sure to introduce your child to his or her teacher either in person or very least by email.
Also education experts recommend families go onto the school's website and let your child see a picture of their new teacher. This will help ease some of those first day jitters.
3. Practice on a pad lock
Stafford Middle School Principal Robin Scott in Frisco says the biggest worry for students walking into middle school for the first time is not being able to get their locker open. She recommends parents giving their students a combination pad lock to practice on during the summer.
4. Keep your child's brain active
The best way to do this, education experts say, is getting your kids to read consistently throughout in the summer.
For some students who enjoy reading this is easy. For others, however; that don't enjoy reading as much, experts say consider going to a comic book store.
5. Start saving for college
Before you know it your kindergartner will be ready to head off to college, and if you're just now starting to save keep this in mind.
To pay for two years of tuition at Collin County Community College, you'll need to save about $31 a month for the next 13 years.
For four years tuition only at Southern Methodist University, you need to be saving around $1,100 every month.
