Rawhide
Rawhide is a re-creation of an 1880s western town. The authentic frontier town is Arizona's largest western-themed attraction. Attractions include live action stunt shows, a petting zoo, gold panning, a stagecoach and a mechanical bull. You can even arrange to get one of your friends arrested! There's also a steakhouse featuring live country music. Admission is free, although it will cost $5 to park. DIRECTIONS: Take I-10 east to exit 162 (Wild Horse Pass Boulevard). Desert Botanical Garden
Desert Botanical Garden features more than 50,000 plant specimens in beautiful outdoor exhibits. Its goal is to advance excellence in education, research, exhibition and conservation of desert plants of the world, with an emphasis on the southwestern United States. Open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Admission -- Adults: $22, Seniors 60+: $20, Students 13-18: $12, Kids 3-12: $10, Under 3: free. DIRECTIONS: Take AZ-101 south to I-10 east to AZ-202 east. Heard Museum
The Heard Museum's mission is to promote a greater understanding of the way of life of the indigenous people of America, with an emphasis on Native American tribes and other Southwestern cultures. Open Monday to Saturday 9:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Sundays 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Admission – Adults: $18, Seniors 65+: $13.50, Students w/ID and children 6-12: $7.50, Children 5 and under and American Indians: free. Pueblo Grande Museum
Step back into prehistoric Arizona with a trip to the Pueblo Grande Ruins. Open Monday through Saturday 9:30 a.m.-4:45 p.m., Sunday 1:00-4:45 p.m. Admission – Adults: $6.00, Seniors 55+: $5.00, Children 6-17: $3.00 (free on Sundays), Children under 6: free. Hall of Flame Museum
The Hall of Flame Museum has more than 90 fully restored pieces of fire apparatus, including dozens of fire trucks. It also sponsors the National Firefighting Hall of Heroes, honoring those who have died in the line of duty and those decorated for heroism. Sedona
If you'd like to take a day trip and get away from the hustle and bustle of greater Phoenix, there's no better place to go to than Sedona. The area is world renowned for its red sandstone formations and its New Age tourist industry. It's a two-hour drive from Surprise. Take AZ-303 to I-17 to AZ-179.
