FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Some folks in North Fort Worth are taking drastic measures to protect their property.

A bold attempt to steal a big rig proved unsuccessful but the family that was almost victimized is taking matters into their own hands. Mr. Lampkin, a truck driver by trade slept in his truck Monday night, guarding it from thieves.

His new big rig didn't get too far but the attempt was enough to startle the Lampkins. Gigi was home alone, while her husband, a truck driver, was on the road.

"A week prior we heard knocking on the door...at 2:30 and at 3:30 they did it again. And that's when I was ready with my gun prepared. And at 3:45 we heard someone juggling our doorknob," said Lampkin.

And when they started talking to their neighbors, the Lampkins they realized they weren't alone. Two doors down, the McClouds had their Ford F-350 swiped right from the driveway twice last summer.

After this latest incident the McClouds wasted no time installing a pretty sophisticated surveillance system. They can monitor their home even when they're not there, through their cellphone.

"Us being here with the girls, it's disturbing to think about."

More recently, other neighbors have shared photos of theft attempts of their cars on social media. As for Mr. Lampkin, he's a man with a plan.

"Bed air conditioning. I can even sit here and watch a movie if I want to," he said inside the bed of his big rig.

Sleeping inside his tractor trailer with a trusted companion by his side. A 9-millimeter glock. "I'm hoping that they come because I won't be firing a warning shot," says Lampkin.
