DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The victim of a cell phone theft CBS11 reported about two weeks ago tracked down his phone using the Find My iPhone app.
Thomas Monroe said that he was riding his bike in a busy north Dallas neighborhood with a friend when four men in a black car followed him, then stole his phone. Surveillance cameras in the neighborhood captured the car speeding off.
Monroe said he didn't expect much when he later tried to check the location of his stolen phone. But when he checked the 'Find My iPhone' app the icon lit up.
"The phone was at the fair and I was just so happy that we could try to track it and get it back," said Monroe.
Thomas alerted his parents James and Karen, who realized that the phone was on the move, tracking inside of a vehicle. The family traced the movement on the map.
"We really just wanted to get a good look at the license plate and the car so that we could get that information to police," said Thomas' father, James.
Two miles from their house the family said the phone was tracking inside of a car. Thomas said it looked like the same car that stopped him and was caught on surveillance cameras.
The family took down the license plate number from a distance and called police.
The family said Dallas Police Investigators told them the suspect they identified is a juvenile.
Police don't know when they will have the phone to return to Monroe.
