Texas Wins Conditional 'No Child Left Behind' Reprieve

AUSTIN (AP) - The U.S. Department of Education has granted Texas a conditional waiver to avoid academic accountability standards under the No Child Left Behind law.
But the department placed Texas on "high risk status" for having future waivers rejected.
The Texas Education Agency announced Tuesday that securing waivers beyond the current school year will require statewide use of teacher and principal evaluations used to make personnel decisions.
But the agency said it won't compel school districts to use a uniform, statewide evaluation system.
Spokeswoman Raymonde Charles countered that the U.S. Department of Education doesn't mandate statewide systems. She said some states got waivers with simple guidelines, which school districts use to develop their own evaluation systems.
Texas for years resisted seeking No Child Left Behind reprieves, but first sought one in 2012.
