LUBBOCK (AP) — A federal workplace safety agency will investigate the death of a male employee at a Lowe's Home Improvement store in Texas who died after a stack of lumber fell on him.

Lubbock Fire Department spokesman Steve Holland said Friday that the 23-year-old man died when a rack of wood fell on him about 11:20 a.m.

There are reports that heavy rescue equipment had to be called in.

Additional details were not immediately available.

A woman who answered the store's phone said employees had been instructed not to talk to the media.

A statement from Lowe's North Carolina headquarters said an internal investigation was underway and that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration also was looking into the incident.

Grief counselors were being sent to the store, which closed for the day a short time after the employee was killed.
