A small plane crashed Monday afternoon in northwest Tarrant County, becoming engulfed in flames and igniting a field where it attempted to land, authorities said.

The crash occurred just before 2:45 p.m. near the 4000 block of Silver View Lane, south of Azle.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the Starduster II plane had just taken off from Flying Oaks Airport in Azle when it experienced mechanical problems and attempted to land in an open field.

"When deputies arrived, the plane was fully engulfed in flames and part of the field was also on fire," the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office reported Monday evening.

The pilot and a passenger in the plane escaped the crash without serious injury, the sheriff's office said.

The Tarrant County Sheriff's Office and the FAA were among the agencies that responded.

Footage captured by the CBS News Texas chopper revealed the charred remains of the plane.
