Rockwall's Checkered History

Rockwall may be up-and-coming, but about 70 years ago Rockwall County seemed to attract some of the bigger names in crime.

For a county its size - Rockwall has snagged its share of hoodlums and nefarious characters, especially in the early days when the likes of Bonnie and Clyde popped up in headlines.

What do Bonnie and Clyde have to do with Rockwall Count? They occasionally popped up in Rockwall County. There's a reason for that.

But it's fair to say Bonnie and Clyde weren't the first questionable characters to show up. In fact, the very first Sheriff, Alexander Starks, was assassinated in 1876. The next year George Garner was arrested, tried and sentenced to hang. And back then...hanging was a big social event.

There was the sheriff who was overpowered by three prisoners only to be freed by his gun-toting wife. And then there was that reason Bonnie and Clyde didn't rob the bank. Ends up they were thwarted by a drug store delivery boy.

Bonnie and Clyde fled...the savings were saved.
