Remains Identified As Texas Soldier Missing In Korean War

DALLAS (AP) — The remains of a Texas soldier killed during the Korean War were identified and are scheduled for burial next month in South Texas.

U.S. military officials announced Monday that the remains of 18-year-old Army Pfc. Herschel M. Riggs of Rio Grande City were identified in March.

Riggs was declared missing in action in July 1950 following combat action against North Korean forces. He was declared dead three years later.

Remains retrieved in October 1950 were later buried at the National Memorial of the Pacific in Honolulu. The remains were disinterred in 2017 and officials using DNA, dental and other analyses confirmed they were those of Riggs.

He's scheduled to be buried May 25 in Pearsall, southwest of San Antonio.
