Regal Cinemas Now Checks Bags At The Door

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Secret Brown and Delta Best both enjoy movies. But they go to the theater with lingering thoughts of recent theater shootings.

"I do," Best said. "Because a lot of times I only go when there are six or eight people in there and I think that was the occupancy of the last one. There weren't very many people in the theater."

Now, right next to the movie posters, movie goers are greeted by signs at Regal Cinemas that read, "For the safety and comfort of our guests backpacks and bags of any kind are subject to inspection prior to entry to the theater."

On its website Regal states:
"We acknowledge that this procedure can cause some inconvenience and that it is not without flaws, but hope these are minor in comparison to increased safety."

The new policy bothers Brown.

"It's okay with a metal detector," Brown said. "But searching? No. That's invasion of privacy."

But bag checks don't bother Best.

"Not at all," she said. "Because with all the things that have happened recently I would much rather have them look through my purse and me feel a little more comfortable that someone hasn't brought in a gun or some other weapon."

It's not clear if the new policy will lure people because of the security or push them away like it will Brown.

"I'd go to the other theater more, the one that doesn't check the purse," she said.
