CEDAR HILL (CBSDFW.COM) - An act of cruelty erased by a Good Samaritan.

A Cedar Hill resident found a Chihuahua puppy at the bottom of a garbage can Wednesday, shortly before garbage trucks were scheduled to pick up trash in the neighborhood.

Hearing whimpering while taking out her own trash, the woman opened the can and discovered the two-pound puppy weak and dehydrated.

The puppy was taken to Tri-City Animal Shelter where staff took care of her and named her, "Treasure."

The non-profit Friends of Tri-City Animal Shelter is covering the cost of Treasure's veterinary care.  She will need surgery for two groin hernias, but she is expected to make a full recovery.

"Not only is abandonment of an animal inhumane, it's also illegal," said Corey Thompson, Executive Director of Friends of Tri-City Animal Shelter.

She urges anyone with information about this crime to contact Cedar Hill Animal Control at 972-223-6111.

A foster family will take care of Treasure until she's ready to be adopted.
