NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The man who attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan in 1981 is being set free from a mental hospital.

CBS News is reporting that a judge granted John Hinckley Jr. full-time release from a psychiatry facility in Washington, D.C.

Hinkley was born in Oklahoma, but moved to Texas when he was 4-years-old. He grew up in University Park and was elected class president twice at University Park High School and graduated from there in 1973.

FBI officials say Hinkley bought the 22-caliber revolver used to shoot President Reagan at Rocky's Pawn Shop in Dallas.
