Power Outage Cancels Classes At McKinney School

MCKINNEY (CBSDFW.COM) - Powerful thunderstorms passed through North Texas on Tuesday night, causing flooding and damage across many area cities. Classes at a school in the McKinney Independent School District were even canceled as a result of the storms.

District officials on Tuesday night announced that Vega Elementary School had lost power during a thunderstorm. Lightning struck a transformer and the repairs were said to be extensive. Oncor was called the scene, but the school district was not sure how long it would take workers to fix the problem.

As a precaution, classes at the elementary school were canceled for Wednesday. All student absences will be excused. The final day of school for those children this year is set to be on Thursday.

By early Wednesday morning, the lights were back on at Vega Elementary School and the electricity looked to have been fully restored. But, since the announcement about canceled classes had already been made, and parents had been informed, it was too late to require students to show up for classes.
