GRAPEVINE (CBSDFW.COM) - The Faith Christian School Lions are undefeated this season after tonight's victory on the field.

But it's their actions off the field, at the urging of Coach Brandon Smeltzer that makes them winners.

Whether it's extra chores, volunteering or the kind words they have for their teammates, Smeltzer's players have taken his words of encouragement to heart.

"He's not just preparing us for the football field. He's preparing us for our jobs, our wives and overall lives one day," said seventh grader Jackson Duck.

At the start of the season players set commitments to help at home, in their community and at church. And they're held accountable for cleaning up their rooms without being told, doing dishes and helping neighbors.

"I realize that as a coach, I have the leverage to help change certain things they do in their homes to become contributors rather than takers," said Smeltzer.

Valuing personal gains over points, Smeltzer's life lessons translate to success on the field.

The coach even has what he calls a "hug line" where one-by-one Smeltzer praises all of his players.

"I've had hug lines when we've gone 2 and 10 and 11 and 0. It's important because the boys need to know our relationship is not based on performance," said Smeltzer.

Players are encouraged to "brag on their brother" or praise them each game, too.

"He truly loves these boys and they're learning life lessons," said one parent, who appreciates Smeltzer's focus on player's work both on and off the gridiron.
