Police Pig Raising Money For Texas Police Department

FRITCH, Texas (CBSDFW.COM/KFDA) - The newest member of the Fritch, Texas Police Department is a real attention getter -- and that's really the point.
Meet police pig Darby O'Driscoll. He has been named the department mascot and is the center of attention wherever he goes.
It may sound like nothing but fun and games, but Darby has a very important job. The pig teaches children to run to police officers, instead of away.
Fritch Chief of Police Monte Leggett explained, "The main goal is it reaches the kids. That's our number one thing -- is to make interaction with law enforcement and children a very pleasurable thing, a safe thing. [We want] them to know that it is safe, that we are the police [and] we're there to help them."
In addition to working in the community, Darby also has responsibilities as a fundraiser. The Fritch Police Department has been struggling to collect funds to buy a much needed patrol unit. The department currently has nine officers, but only three vehicles.
To help Darby also goes out in the community with officers to collect donations at various fundraising events. Any funds raised are put toward the purchase of that police unit.
Fritch, Texas is about 40 miles north/northeast of Amarillo.
