Police Investigate Allegation Of Unlawful Restraint At Elementary School

GARLAND (CBSDFW.COM) - At least one teacher and other staff member was removed from a Garland Elementary School while police investigate disturbing allegations.

The Garland Police Department is investigating an allegation of possible Unlawful Restraint involving disabled preschool children at Shorehaven Elementary.

"In situations like this, what I'm understanding the restraint used from the teacher to the student is something other than their hands," explained Garland Lt. Pedro Barineau. "We can't going to details about what the actual restraint actually was."

The allegation was brought to their attention by GISD Administration earlier this week.

Police said the investigation is early and detectives are interviewing school staff and witnesses to determine if a crime was committed.

Parents are speculating on social media but several told CBS 11 News they are in the dark and want more details. Another parent said the affected children are being monitored for signs of trauma since at least some are too young and/or disabled to communicate.

No reports of injuries were reported at this time and no arrests were made.
