PLANO (CBSDFW.COM) - Maria Vasquez said the news that of an attempted kidnapping of a 9-year-old boy is alarming. "Very scary, concerning. I didn't think this would happen here."

That's why she says she always takes her children to and from school.

"I try the hardest not to have them walking to the house or school," said Vasquez.

Plano police said around 3:30 p.m. Thursday, the boy was walking home from Daffron Elementary School by himself after staying late for tutoring. The boy told police a man in a white van pulled up to him along the 4500 block of Lorimar Drive and asked if he wanted a ride.

Officer David Tilley, Plano Police Department's spokesman said, "The child refused so he allegedly got out of the van and grabbed the child. The child was able to get away and run home and tell his parents of the incident."

Tilley said they haven't received other complaints about an attempted kidnapping. But police are checking with area homeowners and businesses to see if their surveillance video cameras spotted the suspect's white van.

Police urge parents if their children are going to walk to and from school, that they don't do so alone, only in a group.

"Kids are kids, the one minute you think they're old enough to make their own decisions, it maybe the last real decision you make with your kid," said Jamie Campbell, whose child attends school in Plano.

Maria Vasquez agreed. "If I can't make it, my mom or brother are here to pick them up."

Anyone with information about the case is urged to call Plano police or 911.
