PLANO (CBS11) - Midnight on Wednesday morning was the deadline to register to vote in the general election on November 8.

A Denny's restaurant on Preston Road near the Bush Turnpike was staffed with volunteers late Tuesday night.

Thirty-one-year-old Nathanial Medrano has been eligible to vote since he was 18, but registered Tuesday for the first time.

"I actually never voted before. I've never really cared too much and I think the future of the country is at stake here and want to at least say that I voted," said Medrano.

The Plano resident said he's upset with both of the major party candidates and plans to vote for an independent.

"Just want to be able have a say about it especially if things don't turn out very well," said Medrano.

Medrano and more than 40 other people took advantage of a voter registration drive organized by Yvette Jack.

"It's going pretty good so far," said Jack. "More than five million Texans eligible to vote likely were not registered by Tuesday night's deadline, enough to change the outcome of the 2012 presidential race.

New voters like Medrano hope to make a difference.

"I don't want to be one of those people that just didn't make the effort," said Medrano.
