Patios & Parking A Sudden Issue For Some Dallas Businesses

DALLAS (CBS11) - A new city government proposal has some Dallas business owners concerned about their patio seating and future businesses growing in the area.

The proposed amendment to a city ordinance on parking would require taverns, bars, breweries and restaurants to provide extra parking for their patio patrons.

"This to me would just deter for someone to come in and want to start something because it's another hurdle you have to pass," said Meri Dahlke, who owns Ten Bells Tavern in Oak Cliff. "In the winter times, our patio is not usable."

Currently, Dallas does not use uncovered patio space for occupancy rules and requirements.

"It's not broke. Let's keep letting the patios thrive," said Jonathan Hetzel, a property owner involved with the group, Save The Patio.

Hetzel said with the popularity of ride-sharing services like Uber, he thinks the city needs less parking requirements.

"If that amendment was in place, a place like Dots wouldn't be open. Braindead Brewery nearby wouldn't have their big front patio. Truck Yard, HG Supply Co. by Greenville wouldn't be open," said Hetzel.

City Council member Philip Kingston said as it stands, bars and restaurants are able to expand their occupancy through outdoor areas without providing additional amenities like parking.

"I'm trying to determine what the right thing to do is," said Kingston. "I don't really have a position on it yet."

Kingston said if the amendment were to pass, it would likely only impact new businesses moving forward.

A public meeting to discuss the proposal is scheduled for Tuesday, November 29 at 6:00 p.m. at the Downtown Dallas Library.
