DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - An officer with the Dallas Police Department was injured after his squad car was hit from behind in an early morning crash along Interstate 635/LBJ Freeway.

The crash happened around 1 a.m., near Greenville Avenue.

Police say the officer had just completed a traffic stop and had pulled into a closed construction lane area, with his red and blue lights flashing, when a driver rear-ended his squad car.

A car traveling in the eastbound lanes of the freeway was reportedly cut off by another vehicle. Police say when the driver tried to avoid a collision the vehicle slammed into the marked squad car.

The officer, whose name has not been released, was trapped inside the vehicle for an extended amount of time. Dallas Fire Rescue first-responders had to cut the man out of the car.

The officer was taken to Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas and is expected to be okay.

The driver who hit the officer's squad car was not injured and was given a field sobriety test. No word if that individual was issued a citation or arrested.
