IRVING (CBSDFW.COM) -  An Irving police officer was injured during a training session at a local firing range Wednesday morning.

Police say Officer Graham Smith was standing alongside another officer who was firing a handgun at a target approximately 15 feet away.

Fragments from a discharged round ricocheted and struck the officer in the hand, then traveled up his arm.

Other officers gave him first aid and drove him to a nearby hospital for treatment. His injury is not considered life-threatening and he is expected to be released later today.

Officer Smith is a member of the Irving S.W.A.T. team and has been employed with Irving PD since 1990.
