NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) – A fear of people suing police officers for their on-duty actions has led to an uptick in officers buying professional liability insurance, according to the Fraternal Order of Police.

The union says between July 2014 and 2015, the number of members who bought liability insurance jumped 15 percent.

The union's insurance costs $265,000 a year.

The insurance helps cover legal fees but doesn't protect against criminal prosecution.
