Normally high school days are filled with fast cars, sports and dating.  In the McKinney ISD you can add building your own airplane and flying it soon to that list.  The Eagles Nest Program has been underway for five years and they are building their first plane.

"We started five years ago and we had one instructor that we hired from outside the district, and here we are five years later and we have over 200 kids in the program and we are building an RV-12"  said Instructor Jerry Ashton.

Estimates are that over 18,000 airline pilots will retire from the big four air carriers in the U.S. in the next six years. The Eagles Nest Program is giving these students an advantage in the aviation career world and they love it!

"Use to be we had to beg them to get excited about something.  We actually had these kids come in four times over their holiday break and spend hours"  said Instructor Todd Curtis.

JD Ryan goes Around Town and into the hanger at the McKinney Air Center for this high flying story.
