Mask Behind The Mask At UConn

ARLINGTON (105.3 THE FAN) - Caught up with UConn mascot Jonathan the Husky deep in the bowels of AT&T Stadium in Arlington before the NCAA Championship game.

He wouldn't reveal his real name no matter how much I pestered him.

He did reveal that he has some plans for his post game celebration if UConn is able to topple Kentucky.

"I might push a Kentucky player over," Husky said. "No I'm probably going to storm the court and do some belly slides on the floor. Maybe some snow angels in the confetti."

I often wonder if the people who take on the role of mascot are always the life of the party or if they take on a different persona when the mask goes on. Talking to the guy who plays Jonathan he didn't seem like the most outgoing person.

"Actually yes when I put on the head it comes out a little more," he said. "Nobody can see you and nobody knows who you are so you can cut loose a little more."

He also said while he's exhausted physically after the game his brain is even more fried.

"You're always looking for something to make into a prop and some way to be entertaining. There is never a moment during the game where you are just standing around."

UConn hopes after the game he's doing more belly sliding and less standing anyway.
