MANSFIELD (CBSDFW.COM) – A North Texas police officer drove more than 600 miles away to Omaha, Nebraska to help the family of a fallen officer.

"When you lose your life in the line of duty, doing this job, no distance is too far for someone to travel for someone to say thank you," said Mansfield officer Sheldon Peacock.

He loaded up a U-Haul full of baby bottles, diapers – anything an infant would need and headed to the police station where Officer Kerrie Orozco used to work.

She gave birth prematurely to her daughter in February and returned to work not long after. Last Wednesday, the day before Orozco was set to take her infant daughter home, a suspected gang member shot and killed her.

"One of the best days of my life was being able to bring my kids home from the hospital. And it broke my heart that Officer Orozco wasn't going to be able to do that the following day. And it really struck a cord in my heart," said officer Peacock.

Peacock insists this story isn't about him. But instead, about the sacrifice one woman made trying to make the world a little safer.
