Man Struck & Killed Trying To Cross Freeway

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Part of a major roadway in South Fort Worth was shut down Wednesday night after police say a man darted into traffic, was struck and killed.

Several cars hit the man on East Loop 820 near East Berry Street.

The victim was identified as 53-year-old Claude Holman. His brother-in-law, Charles Jennings tells CBS 11 his brother-in-law wanted to cross the busy lanes to get home.

"They hit him and knocked him in the air like a ball," said Jennings.  "He was going to cross but me and my wife said no.  Me and my wife said We're not going to cross because it's too busy."

Jennings says he, his wife and brother-in-law were standing on the grass median separating the service road from Loop 820.  After spending the evening at a nearby game room they were headed home.  Jennings says his brother-in-law wanted to take a short cut.

"She was holding on to him and he snatched his arm away and walked on out there and got hit," Jennings said.

Like a domino effect he says he watched in horror as several cars struck his loved one.

"A lot of them tried to avoid him that's why they come in here," Jennings said while pointing out the tire tracks left behind by drivers trying to avoid striking the victim.

Jennings said his brother in law had been drinking Wednesday night but it's unclear if alcohol was a factor.  That's for detectives to determine.  It's not clear how many vehicles struck the victim and how many of those drivers remained at the scene.  The man was rushed to the hospital with life threatening injuries.
