Suspect dead, 2 police officers hurt after shooting on Texas Tech campus

A suspect is dead after a shootout with two Texas Tech University police officers in Lubbock early Tuesday morning, authorities said.

It happened around 12:45 a.m. in a Texas Tech parking lot located on the north side of Jones AT&T Stadium, according to the Lubbock Police Department.

According to authorities, two university police officers were checking on a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot while also responding to a traffic violation on Marsha Sharp Freeway. During the interaction, police said the suspect got out a gun and began firing shots at officers.

The suspect was then shot by officers and died at the scene, police said.

LPD said the police officers were both shot and suffered non-life-threatening injuries. They were taken to a local hospital.

One officer has since been released from the hospital and the other officer is still in the hospital, according to Texas Tech Police Chief Kyle Bonath.

Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovanec said there was no immediate threat to the community as police responded promptly.

Texas Tech is about a 310-mile drive west of Fort Worth.
