Lawmakers To Discuss Parker County Quakes

AZLE (CBSDFW.COM) - Hundreds of earthquakes rocked the same community since December. On Monday, legislators in Austin are taking a closer look at what is going on in the area near Azle and Reno.

More than 300 earthquakes have happened in this same region, according to a Southern Methodist University study. Most of those quakes were not felt and technically registered at zero magnitude. However, the study shows that most of those minor earthquakes were centered within 1.25 miles of a large injection well.

The study provides no exact answer for what is causing the quakes, but some people who live in the area have a good feeling about what is going on near their homes. "It doesn't really surprise me, just because I know it's probably got something to do with the fracking that's going on," said Azle resident Randy Brewer. "I guess the study will show that."

A committee of state lawmakers will meet on Monday afternoon in Austin to consider ordering a study of seismic activity in Parker County, and its link to the oil and gas industry. This will be the first legislative hearing about the increase of earthquakes in Texas.
