Irving ISD's Newcomer Academy Opens For Immigrant Students

IRVING (CBSDFW.COM) - Immigrant students have a new chance for success after the Irving Independent School District started part two of a new school program Monday.
The program supports students with their social connections in school while assisting them in developing the language skills and literacy development needed for academic success.
"I think we've always had this type of students who've come into our schools. We're just doing a better job of identifying those students and meeting their needs," said Linda Torres-Rangel, who oversees the program. The program is designated specifically for teens facing state standards for graduation who live with challenging academic realities.
"These students get on these buses at midday. They're only here for a few hours. then they go back to their regular high schools. but for this school district, there could be hundreds of other students in this same program," said Torres-Rangel.
Arlington and Fort Worth also have 'newcomer' schools.
