HASLET (CBSDFW.COM) - The new year started off with chilly temperatures and wet conditions, creating a threat for ice on DFW area roadways. Drivers heading out before sunrise on Thursday morning were wisely taking it slow, as a thin layer of ice had already started forming on some bridges and overpasses.
And a few motorists even began 2015 with car crashes.
It was shortly after 1:00 a.m. on Thursday when a driver along Highway 287 lost control on a bridge, spun out and was struck by another vehicle. This happened near the intersection with Avondale Haslet Road, between Haslet and Rhome in northwest Fort Worth.
"I just went to slow down. She was following home. We was in Dallas tonight," explained crash victim Caleb Hemby on Thursday morning. "I went to slow down and, when I hit by brakes, I kind of went sideways, hit the rail over there, and spun all the way around. And I was coming out and she kind of hit me on the side."
A truck driver pulled over to help out the victims. Nobody was injured during the crash.
"I just saw the truck spin out over the overpass there," said truck driver John Lachiewicz. "I just stopped to make sure everybody was okay. Just doing part of my job out here as a truck driver."
That bridge has now been treated for icy conditions. Officials with the Texas Department of Transportation are keeping a close eye on North Texas roads, and trucks loaded with sand are standing by to take care of problem spots. But many of the icy patches had turned to slush by late Thursday morning.
