DALLAS (AP/CBSDFW.COM) — Hundreds of people have turned out in Dallas for a free event on strengthening relationships, being better parents and improving the wellbeing of children.

The free Safe Conversations workshop Saturday at Fair Park was meant to help families who might not have access to therapy. Organizers say the goal is to interrupt the cycle of poverty by strengthening relationships at home.

The Dallas event will kick off a national Safe Conversations campaign, organizers said. They say free workshops have served more than 1,400 couples across the city to date.

A videotaped message from Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings helped welcome participants to the event on the eve of Valentine's Day.

Rawlings says it's about doing a better job of communicating with each other.
